Title: Whats the difference between....
Post by: admc6 on 12 February 2009, 09:50
Coilovers and damper kits? I only ask as i have found some for sale and not sure if i should try and get them.

coilovers are shock absorber and spring as 1 unit and are height adjustable on the car while dampers normally refer to just normal shock absorbers which give a fixed height (but adjustable stiffness is possible on some)

Yeah but cheap coils give a hard ride (more so when ultra low) and you can get adjustable coilovers too making the ride softer (ideal for an everyday car!) but they are £££

These are fk adjustable dampers, with springs added.

Are coilovers a better shock absorber?? and thats why they cost more.

I'm looking to lowering mine by about 40mm, partly for the look and partly for the handling. Dont know about you lot but mine isnt as flat round the corners as i'd like

standard springs arnt great, if you only wanna go down 40mm then i would go for the dampers as cheaper coilies give a harsh ride so if your an old foegy you wont like it,  but they corner like its on rails.

Do coilies tend to be stiffer than dampers? and would they show the bumps in the road more?

cheap coilovers let you feel EVERY bump in the road

guaranteed to rattle and shake your car to bare bones in no time at all!

unless you get adjustable dampening on your  (cheap) coilovers you're not going to get a smooth ride

i was also watching these. i asked the seller several specific questions about them and also asked if i could pick them up if i won. he got back to me with lots of general information but was not specific enough for me to be happy with bidding. i checked last night and they were on £82 which i thought was worth a punt but decided against it in the end- if something seems too good to be true, then it almost always is, especially on gaybay. i see they've ended on £260, which is about £100 more than i would have paid, but hey i'm a grumpy old git. i might contact the winner just out of interest in a few weeks.. have you seen the jamex ones on there for £129? apparently they are quite basic but wtf do you expect for that money??

think im right in saying that jamex ones are basically the same as raceland ones which are 169 with 2 year warrenty.. in my eyes they cant be beaten unless your and old man and want comfort in which case you will have to shell out over 500 quid...

Like i said i'm not in any rush.

There is a vw specialist near me who is really into his vw's. I'm going to pop in and ask his thoughts, see how i get on. Best to get as much advice as you can find.

Cheers for the help tho lads

Hi there, slight hijack of this thread here,

Havnt long had my new valver and altho it seems to go like a train in a straight line and have a fair amount of grip in the twisties, im def feeling it has got wayyyyyyy to much body roll like so many other people feel.

Im a totally and utterly skint student, whats my best option to sort it out on the cheap without it being 100% rock solid?? I got a slightly heavy right foot and an addiction for cornering but at the same time have to endure the motorways and shopin/uni runs aswell!

Cheers!!!
