Title: I am totally satisfied with my Mk5 GTI.
Post by: Egbutt Wash on 12 February 2009, 09:19
After mulling over other cars I realise that I'm really happy with my GTI.  It does everything right (even the steering is not too bad).
My modifications were a bluefin at 160 miles and brighter lightbulbs at 300 miles.  These both made a good car better.
I'm also very pleased with the bright red colour, especially in these glum times.

Everything considered it's the best car I have ever owned, and one of the cheapest.

Is anyone else totally pleased with their Mk5 GTI?

I love my GTI.  It's fun, practical, costs are low, looks great, handles great and I can't praise it enough!

After I've given her a good clean is when I feel most pleased with it

The GTi is my 31st car in 21yrs of driving!!!

Previously to this, I had a BMW 120D M sport. I only kept it 3 mths!! Within a week of buying it, I knew there was something about the car I did not like.

Anyway, when I saw my GTi 4 sale, I was offered a great deal, so jumped into my first VW.

Its early days, 3 weeks in, but I have to say, I LOVE THIS CAR!!! For the first time in 31 cars, I have had no doubts whatsoever that its the car for me. Normally, after a week or so, the novelty wears off and I start to doubt my purchase. Not this time, I love the GTi and think I will keep it for at least 2 years.

I need to tighten up the suspension and sort out a remap, also need new wheels (cos two are fooked) and get a good detailing job done. Pretty much sorted....I think....like the way its Fast fun and practical at the same time...never had a car that can be so adaptable....and with the resale values in the toillette think its time to keep her, treat her and love her some more

That said...dont tell her but I have always had a fascination with a 911....you just cant help your feelings eh...and theres no point in staying together just for the sake of the kids  :smug:

....

I love mine too!

Everytime I park, lock, and walk away from her I have to turn and admire the way she looks.
It's just like a pretty girl you pass in the street - You have to turn and perv all over her have a second look!

And as for being a great allrounder AND a pure joy to drive at any speed - fast or slow.

No reason not to keep her.

Hi Andy,

I was considering a 120d m sport or more likely a 123d m sport as a replacement for the gti (but not yet:))  I'd love a comparison if you wouldnt mind

....Theoretically, if they are obliged to submit a figure which is close to the current market value, you could get a bargain. But of course no-one knows what you'll 'lose' when you eventually want to sell her.

Hmm, the R32 is potentially a bit of a classic in the longer term. At least you know her well and can decide how much you want to keep her.

....Hi matey :afro: Long time no see/hear.

Yep, she's running very sweet at the moment and I'm loving the VWR-KW-V3 suspension combined with Quaife. I'm going to the Dyno-Day at JKM 7th March - Not expecting bigger numbers but more interested in checking her health. It's nice to combine it with a social.

How about you?

Think its taken the majority of its hit already so would not mind investing in a R32 long term. As I usually like to change cars every 2 yrs I thought this would be the case with the R but its gone totally the other way....  :undecided: i really do want to keep her, but will wait and see how cheap i can get it.

Have been seriously tempted by this tho.... http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/888405.htm

Beemers are excellent cars imo and I think they currently make the best diesels......But from petrol V6 to diesel zorst music?

I'd keep the .:R and buy a Milltek instead! But each to their own.

Hi Andy,

Mate, although both cars are "nippy" premium hatches - thats were the comparison ends!!

1. The BM - (pre the Sep 07 facelift - mine was a Mar 07).

Pros - Very low, sports car like and infinitely adjustable seating position, big chunky steering wheel, RWD, slick gearbox, 163bhp, prestige brand.
Cons - very poor front/rear visibility - really hard to park this car!,not that well screwed together, awful runflat tyres, cramped rear seats/legroom, heavy clutch, useless in the wet, average 35mpg (poor for a diesel), very expensive servicing.

2. The Gti -
Pros - An everyday useable family hatchback! Very quick when the mood dictates but also happy to potter about round town when the wife drives her! Very light controls, easy to drive/park. Grippy when pushing on, but smooth and comfortable on poor surfaces (17" tyres). Classless image. Subtley understated. 30mpg - excellent for a 2ltr Turbo.
Cons - High insurance group, erm....honestly not found anything else yet?????

In summary, if you are a family man with a kiddie or 2, then in my opinion, the GTi is the only choice. Its a family hatchback and brings all the benefits associated to that class of car, but when the mood demands, it turns into a snorting monster which loves to play!
The BMW is a much more focussed car (especially in M Sport guise). As daft as it sounds, its more difficult to get in and out of (being much lower). RWD and runflats tyres means handling is bordering on dangerous in the wet/slippery roads. All 1 series come with T/C as standard - this is a marketing gimmick! BMW would have been sued by now if they didnt fit T/C - so many people would have crashed their cars! One very important  point is this - if buying a 1 series ENSURE its a 2007(57) onwards car with Efficient dynamics - the 120D gets a newer engine with 177bhp as opposed to mines 163bhp. More importantly, its better screwed together, much more economical and all controls are lighter, therefore its easier to drive!

Sorry if this a bit hap-hazard, Im typing as things enter my napper! Please be careful with the 1 series. In my opinion, its one of those cars that has loads of showroom appeal - but the small inconveniences such as being difficult to park, poor rear legroom and low seating position, etc all become very irritating very quickly! Im 40 and have had enough of compromising with my cars. The GTi is better screwed together and feels totally bullet proof. My BMW had done 20,000 miles but had problems with a juddery clutch when cold (common fault all engines), random misfire at motorway speeds (common fault 120D engine) and poor fuel economy.

A brilliant site with lots of helpful folk is  http://www.babybmw.net/forum/index.php

Its funny how 1 series and GTi drivers are linked - many 1 series owners told me they too considered a GTi at some point when buying the 1, and many are considering it again!

Regards

Andy

Very interesting post Andytran.  My BMWs ABS control unit failed just out of warranty.  Various sensors have died and the seat leather ripped after just 22,000 miles.  Nice for a bit of lovely sounding RWD fun with the top down but not the unbreakable machine I was expecting.

I made my GTI even better tonight.
Driving up the M6 in the fog I missed the turn to Kendal.  The motorway further on was strewn with wrecks (sleet and fog).  Turning on my full beam to avoid the smashed cars I noticed my offside full beam was pointing into space.  Once home (safely) I took the bulb out, it was upside down.  I had driven for 10 months with a lighthouse beam.

Yep been there, I looked into a 120SE and even put a deposit down on one, turned up to pick it up to find it was a 120ES ( a Very different car)
Rejected the car, got my deposit back and found myself driving to Cardiff to test drive a GTi, brought it home same day.
Its best car I've ever had. P***ed all over the Mini Cooper S I used to have.

Last summer I saw a guy getting out of his immaculate Mk2 GTI and had a brief chat with him - He'd had it from new!

Unfortunately I've seen a few Mk1/2/3's which haven't been looked after though.

The plastics are not touchy feely Graham Norton camp but they are very tough.  Should last for years (ask a Mk5 owner with a dog).

Yep, a lot of people criticise the interior 'plastics' but methinks they would prefer an Audi interior. The Mk6 might satisfy them. Me? - I much prefer the Mk5 interior as it is without any unnecessary fancy trim and funky.
