Title: Starter motor problem?
Post by: oakgreengolf on 12 February 2009, 08:47
Ok the starter hasn't been right for some time, rev counter goes bonkers when you try to start car. sometimes sticks then fires. Is ok when warm. This morning did the same however i think the starter has jammed, now when I turn the key and the fuel pump primes but nothing happens. The red/blk wire to the starter is getting 12v when the ignition is turned. So would this be an electrical problem or the starter is f**ked. Ive tryed bashing it with a hammer and rocking it in 3rd. I presume as its getting 12v it should work. connections seem clean. If it has jammed is it safe to get towed and jump it in 2nd to get it into my garage.

does sound like it, but to be crtain jump the pin direct to the battery with a length of wire.
if its dead there is no problem bump starting the car and driving it, just dont stall it ;)

any MK2 or 3 starter from a 1.6-2.0 will fit (except automatics, and the MK3 1.6 & 2.0 16v), MK2 diesel and MK3 GTI ones are a bit beefed up as well.

1.9D   is the starter you want.   mk3 golf 1900d has 020 style gearbox  will fit all 020 boxes.       abf has 02a gearbox
