Title: Replica 18" wheels??
Post by: jphealy on 11 February 2009, 10:35
I've been talking to VW dealers here in Dublin about ordering a set of the 18"s for the '06 GTI I'm about to pick up (it's currently on the standard 17"s).  The dealers are quoting me about €2000 for the genuine VW ones including tyres and VAT.  They're also quoting about half that amount for the 18" replicas.  What would these replicas be like?  I'd be happier on the genuine VW wheels, but it's a lot of money.

How much do genuine ones cost in the UK, with tyres?  I could maybe order them in Northern Ireland if I were to save myself some money.

I'm surprised a VW dealer is offering replicas, while I have no experience with them myself most people on here say to avoid them.  You might well save some money by ordering in NI as you will be taking advantage of the current exchange rate.  Depends on the tyre brand etc though as I'd imagine a genuine set + premium (michelin/goodyear etc) tyres will cost somewhere in the region of £1500 (estimate).

Be careful with the offsets of replicas. There's a mk5 near me on RS6 replicas and the offset is all wrong. They stick out of the arches a bit much.
I'm going to second the idea of checking prices in Northern Ireland too.

Thanks.  Think I definitely will check out NI.  Not quite yet though - pretty wiped out from buying the car!

Watch out for EBAY seller supersheen1.....sells genuine VW wheels that are copies....he will NOT admit they are either.....some of us on here have personal experience in this matter.

Hopefully he remains suspended...but be wary and if looking for genuine wheels get to know the differences and the correct markings on the inside of the wheel.

VW will never offer replica wheels!!!

If they are than i must say they do seem very corrupt, you should contact VW UK about this..

maybe its some sales man trying sell some replicas on the shady, My VW dealership even refuses to work with replica wheels, very strickt on aftermarket stuff.

Vw verve in Glasgow also do remaps.......according to the remaps in Scotland post. I'm hoping the poster will expain..... I have heard of dealers selling replicas.... I found it hard to believe but they can sell them but replacing real with replicas for say White worm issues is a no no, where it should be like for like. "should".

wow thats mad, vw selling repliac rims of there own design lol seems really funny but confusing aswell

kinda like rolex selling fake rolexes

but then again bbs own the monza2 wheel, and ronal/speed line all the audis so i guess they dont have to be 100% oem trade.

regarding remaps at Verve
over a year ago while at Starperformance Kirkcaldy Jim said he had remapped a couple of customers cars bought new from Verve and a couple of demonstrators, Polo Gtis if I remember
dodn't know if this is still the case or if they now have someone more local doing it
I was offered a remap last year when I bought my car from aVW tech who worked at Verve, said he had the equipment to read the ecu then send the file to someone down south who would write a new file and then reload it. who knows maybe he is doing it officaily now for Verve

Verve have been making ordinary golfs etc look good by fitting reps for a couple of years, not cheap mind, for reps any way, about £700 with budget tyres

I have a set of Monza 18s reps in my shed that aren't too bad at all, I bought them as a cheap set of 18s untill I could get a hold of a set of CHs that are on the car just now
IMO I don't think the real BBS Monzas are worth the money considering what has happened to almost everyones with the white worm, it's just a matter of time before it appears and that's not on for a supposed premium product from BBS and how many times will VW replace them

Another thing worth noting that in my (albeit limited) experience, REPS always seem to be a lot heavier than the genuine article, unless of course the Reps are made by the likes of BBS etc.

the 17's provide a much smoother ride.  i find that although the 18's on my GTI look the part the ride is a little too firm.

So maybe stick with the 17's.

if you really want 18's i would check ebay.

I'm picking the car up this Saturday.  I'm getting used to the idea of leaving it on the 17s alright.  I'll certainly be leaving them on for a few months anyway, until my finances recover!

Brian...are you selling your monza reps? I am kind of set on a genuine vw's, but see what you mean with respect to the worm issue...had my eye on a set of genuine Pescaras but I haven't really made my mind up on them.

I have 2 buckeled wheels...and would also like to get away from my fake R32 look....despite the fact that actually I would love an R32  :undecided:  still a GTI should be just that ..so thats kind of where I am coming from.

no mate, i'm keeping them for the moment as i'm going to change the colour of my CHs to a anthracite/dark grey soon, probably when the worst of the winter is over and I like the wow factor of the Monzas. That's why I think £300 for a set of reps is a no brainer if they are a second set of wheels
If I was only going to have 1 set of wheels it would be CHs or Pescaras, not as much of a worry if the wife kerbs one as a lot easier to get repaired

Im in the same boat - or I was.

Mines got 17s on and Ive been looking for Monzas - most likely replicas because OEM are sooo expensive.
However, I drove my Bosses R32 at the weekend with 18s on - noticeably firmer, crashier ride.

I will stick with the 17s thanks!

Andy

well i had 17" genuine gtis, plus 3sets of replica 8j 18" and replica 18" 7.J, and over the years a various selection of tyres..

and id conclude regarding road comfort that its all down to the tyres you have, after trying all major brands ive finally find some 18" tyres that give even better comfort than when i had 17s!!

so with my genuine 18" monzas with my tyres im very happy with ride comfort.

With the white worm issue im thinking that if you have brand new monza2s and you use poorboys reguarly then this would help combat the white worm issue?

im lucky as my genuine monzas dont have the white worm yet, will be applying poorboys more often due to weather salt grit issues around here.

This winter with the snow and ice has really tested them and perfect in everyway, in handling and comfort.. I think my tyre dealer said they were made by continental.

Bargain at £100 225/40/18

Unconditional warrenty, even if somebody stabs your tyres they will come out and replace them!!

I had a set of replica 17" Santa Monicas on one of my mk4's, got them new for 600 quid inc tyres. They weighed an absolute ton, heavier than steels! They were pitted within 9 months. ....oh yes and they ruined the whole suspension, replaced all shockers and the snapped....yes, snapped rear springs!!!!

To be honest €2000 doesn't seem that expensive - as VW in Northallerton wanted £1600 without tyres to upgrade one of their 2nd hand models from 17s to 18s. Naturally I told them where to go. Unfortunately it's very difficult to get hold of genuine monza 2's for a reasonable price unless you buy them fitted from new.
