Just got a question about how long a 02A gearbox lasts.
out of a abf 16v or say vr6 or g60. they are all same aren't they?
i have seen lots of these boxes being rebuilt, so wasnt sure what the average miles are before they go bang. i guess it depends on how hard they have been used.
ohh and how hard is it to rebuild a gearbox?
thanks in advance.

02A boxes are much longer lived than than 020 boxes, seen diesel passats on meay00,000 with orginal box and no issues.
resason you see them getting rebuilt is as there tougher they get put in higher power cars that are haveing more spent on them so why not overhaul it to make sure and make a few adjustments,
they still spit diff rivets out like 020 boxes but not as keenly so diffs get bolted or replaced with lsd and quite often 2nd gear gets a tweek so it'll do 60 in 2nd

found an 169000 box. how hard is it to give an overhaul and tweek bits that need tweeking?
ohh and how much should i pay for a box with that many miles on?
its going to be running with a 260/270bhp 1.8t, so mite benefit from an overhaul!
thanks.

boxes arn't hard to rebuild if your ok with tools and have them, messy tho.
if the box behaved well id probaly leave it allone, if this is the box out of the golf that DH broke it drove/ shifted fine better than some with much less miles.
