Thanks mate just called.
-
i browsed through it, it does the mk6 gti no favours at all, it looks awful imo
-
Do they rate the mkVI highly? What's their pick for the "ultimate GTI"?
-
Their pick of ultimate GTI is the Mk2
and rightly so, not that i am bias at all
-
It's a touch misleading I thought as there is no review of the mk6!
-
They also gave the MkV 5 stars in every category and then said the Mk2 was the best. I'm not arguing, though .
-
am I missing something, as Gene asked for autoexpress and that was Evo, or are they one in the same now?
-
The Mk5 easily won overall.
But because the steering is better on the Mk2 it was placed first.
Although anyone seeing Fifthgears crash between a big old Volvo and a little modern French car (the Volvoists would be dead, the Fracophiles just fine) would be mad to drive a 1980's car.
Might buy a Mk2 myself though, just for the steering.

Dennis Publishing own both.
They also own VIZ
Viz Top Tip...
GOLF GT DRIVERS: Attach a lighted sparkler to the roof of your car before starting a long journey. You drive the thing like a sodding dodgem car anyway

Have to second that - I think the Mk2 16v is the best, closely followed by the Mk5 and then the Mk1... I reckon they go it spot on for the frist three but chose the Mk3 over the Mk4?!

The Mk2 is much greater than the sum of its parts

Tough choice between the Mk2 and Mk5.
One has the comfort, specification and safety of a modern car.
One has the "charm" of being an old classic and having a certain retro chic.
If given the choice I know which one I would choose, or rather have chosen
-
I was thinking of buying a Mk2 for pottering about in.
Having looked at the crash test video there's no way I want one.
Crash a Mk2 GTI into any modern car and you will be dead.
The crash test is here...

Very basic piece of journo IMHO. MK 2 was good in it's day but the Mk 5 is easily the best of all to date. Too early to comment on Mk 6 without a good test drive/real world report. Seen a few cars on transporters as well as in dealers and looks very vulnerable with no body protective trim on doors/side panels. Mk 1 was the icon and the Mk 3 and 4 (with all due respect to owners of these cars) are best forgotten about.
Publication would have been better with comparitive stats instead of just a skeletal write up.
Big bumper Mk 2 might make me think about purchasing a project car though : )
