The ultimate Golf is here! And this time, the flagship hot hatchback has more power and an all-new badge to boot.
The replacement for the R32 is being referred to within VW as the R-Series Turbo, but it’s likely to be called the R20T, hinting at its engine capacity. And our exclusive pictures show how the most powerful Golf ever will look when it eclipses the GTI at the top of the range.
VW is ditching the R32 name, along with the 3.2-litre V6 that’s powered the previous two cars, Auto Express has learned. In its place will be a tuned version of the GTI’s four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged engine.
A bigger turbo, as well as tweaks to the ECU, will ensure the car has a power output of around 270bhp – that’s more than 20bhp above the outgoing V6. What’s more, as the unit is lighter, the R20T should weigh roughly the same as the GTI.
But with all that extra power on tap, it will deliver scintillating pace, with the 0-60mph sprint arriving in about five seconds. That’s a full second-and-a-half quicker than the MkV R32, and only a few tenths shy of BMW’s V8-engined M3. Top speed will be limited to 155mph.
The same engine will power an R20T version of the Scirocco. This was previewed by the Studie R concept at Italy’s Bologna Motor Show last year.
Although a VW spokesman refused to confirm whether the Golf would be driven by the front or all four wheels, the latter is more likely – as on the heavier and thirstier R32. This will help to put all that power on to the tarmac, as well as provide high levels of grip.
The engine will channel its power through a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or VW’s DSG dual-clutch set-up. And as the unit is smaller and lighter, the R20T will offer significant improvements in fuel economy and emit less CO2 than the car it replaces.
VW’s designers have taken the understated looks of the R32 to the next level. A deep front spoiler with integrated LED headlights – a styling cue borrowed from sister company Audi – takes inspiration from the Concept BlueSport seen at January’s Detroit exhibition, while flared wheelarches, wider tyres and lowered suspension provide further clues to its potential.
At the rear, in true R-series style, twin pipes exit close to the centre-line of the car. Plus, a ‘sound-optimised’ exhaust system should ensure the R20T delivers noise to match its looks. A roof spoiler and underbody diffuser both help to increase downforce and keep the car planted at high speeds, too.
Reports suggest that the R20T will make its public debut at the Nürburgring 24-hour race in Germany in May, before going on sale in UK showrooms early next year. Prices will start from around £25,000 for the three-door, with the five-door costing £2,000 more – pitching the VW head-to-head with the Ford Focus RS and Subaru Impreza STi.

That looks the business!!!!
-
It certainly does look aggressive, sad to see the 3.2 v6 go though
I must tell your bro you are interested in the R20T synnea.. he'll have the R32 back off you again
-
My R32 V6 is a classic for sure now. Clive, I still have your bottle opener!! Tell my bro to keep reminding me!!
That R20 will shift for sure though, 5 secs to 60   I am very interested to see how the 4 pot will sound with this mooted 'sound-optimised’ exhaust system' as VW put it. Will never be the same awesome note of the V6 but will be interesting to see how good they can make it.
-
This is Auto Express don't forget, all I'm saying is it might not be the whole truth.
-
The R32 is tested at 6 secs (most i have seen) not sure how it will be a second quicker (when you get under 6 secs to 60, one second is a big difference, 1.5 is alot!)
Looks like a chavs wet dream though :lipsrsealed:

Its ok, I ended up getting a bottle opener off ebay for a couple of quid, have yet to use it though
I can't imagine a 4 pot sounding anything like the V6 no matter how much they fiddle with the exhaust.. I would love to be proven wrong though!

Very true, I'm especially suspicious of the pictures because they look like artists impressions rather than the real thing.
-
Lovely car
-
if it is true, will it not be competing with the Audi S3 for market share?

Yeah but surely it did anyway with the Mk4 and Mk5 R32's... Old and new S3's were out over the same periods.

Funny VW leak that rumour just as Ford are bringing out the RS.

Yeah but Ford promise loads and deliver nothing. What happened to the Focus RS Cosworth?? Never happened and the last RS was released 4 years after the Focus was launched. If they finally deliver this one it will be on the second generation of the current model. VW will have given us 3 .:R models in the Golf by then over three Mk's.
It's all clever advertising but I think you either like one or the other. Ford or VW... I know which queue I am in!
-
The RS is a real car, they are taking orders.
In general Fords actually are a better drive than VWs, with just a slightly worse image.
The exception is the standard Golf GTI whose image is much higher than any Ford or any other VW for that matter.

Thats why VW pouched the Ford man who developed the Focus suspension set up!
The Focus RS will be a right handful... 300bhp through the front wheels! Scary!
-
They need to poach the chap who developed the Focus MkII's suspension, it's better than VW's.
300 bhp should be OK with a form of LSD, knadgery steering and that wonderful suspension.
-
Its got a quiff diff or something?    VW have got to sort out the name R20T doesn't do it for me. Just call it a GTI-R or something manly like road ripper or exotic and name it after an old racing driver/designer/road in Italy, or the autobahn eater, something like that.

Diff or no diff that car has too much power for 2 front wheels. power is nothing without control.... expect the esp to be working fulltime + some
-
Makes interesting reading!
Gonna start saving hard for next year then!

I agree - seems from a marketing or stance point of view to call it a less number than the R32....even though it evidently refers to the engine size.

That article (if any of it can be believed) implied it would likely be four wheel drive ala MkV R32..
-
IF... theres any substance in this story and IF.. its produced i,m defo gonna get one!!!
It,l be bye bye RS4 HELLLOOOOO!! R20T fully loaded...
-
What about Hondas next Civic Type R. Electric motors in each wheel. 0 - 60 @ 4.5 seconds.
Allegedly.

R20T? Sounds like a fakkin Renault

looks nice, love the front and the rear bumper but the shape of the back lights just doesnt do it for me :undecided:

& even that's not all that, IMO. VW need to poach the guys who set the Meg. R26/R26-R's chassis up!! :D

This has all gone very quiet.
With the Geneva Motor Show opening in 3 days I would have expected a bit more in the way of confirmed news. So will VW launch the R20T at Geneva or are autoexpress talking out of their arse again. Most of the other manufacturers have confirmed to the press about their new launches at Geneva but VW have been very quiet. Even Audi have announced that the TTRS will be unveiled.
Hopefully VW will pull a rabbit out of a hat.
-
Yeah, I was just thinking the same actually. Surely something would have been announced by now, especially given the show is this week. We wait and see then......
-
-
A lot of other boring models have been launched instead such a the 5 Blue motion models
Plus the quite nice looking Polo.
Reports say it will be May when its out.
For me its this Golf R20, the Rocco R20 if we see that, or a Focus RS.
Got about 25k for our next car to replace the ED30 early next year, so holding out on this Golf.
The mk6 GTi, just isn't doing it for me at the moment, and the Rocco is a bit EOS boring, at the moment.

New polo looks very nice
-
Well it looks like it's not in the lineup at Geneva. Just the new Polo and bluemotion models. How exciting.
Auto Express as reliable as ever then with their fairytales articles.
-
Where does it say Geneva? I see "Reports suggest that the R20T will make its public debut at the Nürburgring 24-hour race in Germany in May".
-
R20T is to blast off at Geneva, and will take the fight to Ford's Focus RS. It promises incredible pace, with a tuned turbo and lightweight body.
...below the article headline when you click on the link.
-
haha, quality reporting
-
thats just a dog sh!t photoshop, with some pure speculation and rumour thrown in for good measure.
r8 v10 alloys?
they havent even shown a concept so dont be expecting anything along these lines on your drive way till well into 2010.
i dont know how these people make a living throwing out the utter bollocks they do.
shameful

if you read this months PVW they have said that VW have told them its not happening
