Post by: daddy kool on 09 February 2009, 18:52
Hi Guys!
My 05 gti central locking has stopped working ,been working intermitantly for 4 days and now won't lock or unlock car.
Have tried both keyfobs  to no avail .
Any pointers would be very much appreciated.

First thing I'd do is put fresh batteries in the fob.

It's still worth trying new batteries in the fob.  The spare set might be flat.

Ok !
Thanks for all your help so far.
When I normally turn the ignition off the radio turns off when removing key from ignition!
Ocasionally when you remove key from ignition the radio stays on ,this is the time that the central locking does not work at all.
So radio staying on when key removed indicates there will be central locking malfunction.
Radio turning off when key removed ,then everything works fine.
this is happening  completely at random.
I will take it to the dealers as soon as I can get time off work ( dealer is 30 miles away)
Then I can enlighten you on results.

Hummmmmmzz

Sounds like a cable or something has got squashed and might be shorting or have become intermittently loose at its happening at random. Very strange.

i had this problem out the blue on a 2 month old car, tried spare keys never used, still the same, then i opened door manualy then open the boot, hey presto! everything working back to normal ever since. i think the central locking went all out of sync and stopped working altogether and this appeared to reset it, had the problem when it was a deep frost, don't know weather this had somthing to do with it. Give it a try anyway.

Or in the unlikely event of perhaps something not detecting the removal of your key..... Central locking won't work with a key in the ignition..... Maybe the root of the issue is neither the key or the central locking.....spray wd40 in the barrel .... Errrr LOL don't! Unless someone else who has a bloody clue what they are talking about comments........hope you find a fix soon, don't forget to post when you do :-)

You could be right ,on the fact that the electronics are not recognising ignition key removal and this is why the radio does not turn off as usual !!!

The ignition is just a switch, and like any, contacts get dirty/ worn/ loose are you still under warranty? Try key removal and flicking from position 1-2-3-0 a few times could it just be a dirty contact? Hey ian just guessing mate, good luck.

my mate had this problem and just blew a airline down the ignition and seemed to be fine ever since, must have just been crap on the switch contacts or something as somebody else said earlier in this post
