Title: sorry - springs question.
Post by: edpryce on 08 February 2009, 15:24
I have used the search but still am a little unclear, I am trying to lower my car on a budget. (mk2 1984 8v gti). Car has done 80k, on what I believe are the original shocks.

Seen some new Jamex springs (40mm) for sale £30, will I also need to change my shocks or can i use the existing ones? and if I dont, how long will my spine last running standard shocks?

Cheers in advance, lets keep this thread short and sweet for everyones sake.

Ed

Obviously on a 25 year old car its recommended to replace the shocks if you are replacing the springs, Boge gas from GSF come recommended from most as a budget alternative.

std shocks  can manage -40 mm  just  if there in good health and the bumpstops are very good.    worn bumpstops and shocks will last about a week*

*depending how you drive and stiffness of springs ect

I would seroiusly change the shocks as well, buy the springs now and the shocks later and fit them at the same time if you are on a budget

Cheers, I guess I will need to start looking at shock prices. Novice - are bump stops included with shocks or are they an extra?

bump stops are extra, you will also probably need to renew the front top mounts

starting to add up, looking like those hotuning coilovers might be a cheaper option?

If your worried about your spine i think you need to consider a shock and spring combo. This is what i am about to do for similar reasons. Can't you wait and save the cash instead of spunking it on a cheap compromise?

go for new shocks and springs, no point relying on crappy old shocks to take the strain.

also new top mounts are a must, the bearings are liable to seize resulting in VERY notchy and stiff steering (from experience) and take bugger all to change once the shocks are off. they cost about £20-£25 for a pair

you only want to do the job once

yeah, saving was what i was doing, but I got the car in june and its still high as f**k! just thought these were a good deal, but as ever nothing is as cheap as you think.

cheers for the help, i'll see how i really want to eat over the next term before splashing out

i helped a work mate fit some hot tuning coilovers and i road tested it with him and i thought they were ok :)

they were on a 1.4 MK3 like but i guess they are the same as MK2
