Hiyarp.
Just got a new GTi, 8v, 87
My speedo stopped working, instead I hear this rotation noise that gets faster the more I speed up,
I took them out and found abit of plastic in the hole in the back of my clocks that happily fell into my hand,... I take it this should be attached to something?
Is my cable broken?
-
what should the "in car" end look like if intact anyway?
-
there should be a long square pin which is pushed into the end of the cable, this pin then fits into the speedo this is the bit that spins and moves the speedo. I had a similar problem whith mine, the pin had come out and was just rattling around, I pushed it as far into the cable as I could then re-connected the cable to the clocks, that sorted it.
-
Right, i couldnt seem to push my pin in, should there be a hole in the metal part? theres seems to be a bit of white stuff in there?
Ya think in changing my clocks around, one has snapped off inside?
As the square pin was sat in my other clocks.
-
there should be a square hole in the cable end, for the pin to fit into. in the back o the speedo there should be a square hole as well, the white stuff you mention is prob just grease.

ide liek to think it was grease... so your telling me that hole should be clear?
there must be somethng in there as I pushed that pin with quite some force and it wouldnt go in, Im failry certain another pin has snapped off inside, ....possible could be the mystery thing that fell down my dash board when I was fiddling about with it.
Il take it out and try and clear the hole then, as a new cable in now unavailable from VW :(
-
well the clocks end should be an empty hole, and the cable end should have a square peg. drive it with the clocks out and you should see the square peg spinning around as you drive, but dont go too far as the alternator wont be charging.

fixed, cheers guys! :)
Had to do a new cable in the end from GSF as VW dont do em anymore.
