I was test driving a '06 mkV GTI this morning and I'm thinking about buying. One thing that bothered me about it though, was there was no manual in the glove box. I asked the dealer about it and he said that the guy who traded it in probably still had it, so he would contact him and try to get it.
My question is, if he doesn't have it and it was just lost or whatever, can a new one be ordered from a VW dealer (the car is for sale at an Opel/Saab garage) and if so, how much might they charge for one? It would definitely annoy me not having one.

Yes you can order one from vw.
You should also check ebay as they come up every so often.

Check if its an import, not really an issue if it is but you don't want to buy what you think is a UK sourced car when it isn't. Did it have the spacesaver spare wheel or a can of gunk? If its the can of gunk its a pretty good indication that its an import...

Check if its an import,
My first thought too ! :nerd:
has it got the service booklet ? check where and when the PDI was done
you can also ring VW UK and they should be able to tell you if it's an import as well as the cars recorded history, servicing regime etc
Nice new example here complete wil leather wallet :

Remember that imports are often of much higher spec than UK cars.

In what way exactly?! Can't believe you write such rubbish and get away with it

There are plenty of GTI's around. If the dealer can't source the book then either look elsewhere or get one from ebay - if you want to know if its an import, then just look in the Service Schedule at whihc dealer did the initial check before purchase.

I suspect he is alluding to the premise that as the cost price of a basic import car being lower than a similiarly speced UK one, folk usually get more options factory fitted.

I bought an import and it came with no Handbook - it was very annoying as I had no proof the it was PDI'd
I bought a handbook from a main stealer for a smidge under 50 quid. Naturally i passed the cost on to the company i bought the car from!

Quite possibly a stupid question: What is a PDI? I'm in Ireland, not UK, so it might be something we don't have here.
-
Pre Delivery Inspection, done at the supplying dealer. If its an import it should stand out. My mk4 was an import and didn't come with anything other than the service book. But it did come with leather recaro's, climate and an electric sunroof, a combination of options which weren't available on a UK spec car at the time.
Check that it comes with a uk spec alarm and speakers in the back.
Nothing wrong with an import, make sure its registered with VW UK so you're notified of any recalls.
-
As I said - I'm in Ireland, so to me, a UK car would be an import! Anyway, I've seen the paperwork on it and it's definitely an Irish car (i.e. not an import).
-
Simple - no handbook=no deal
-
Dealers sell them. Worth reading too.
-
Any idea how much dealers sell them for?
-
As I said in this thread already - £50
-
Sorry flyingzard! I guess I missed that. Thanks!

No worries. It may be slighly more than that now as i seem to remember the Parts chap in my local steelers saying that i was lucky to get one at the cheaper price as the price was about to go up. I cannot imagine it will go up that much.....

I've actually found out from the dealer selling the car that the manual is actually in the glove box. I guess I missed it in that top compartment! So crisis averted.
Out of interest, I talked to the parts dept of a VW dealer in Dublin to enquire about the cost of replacing the owner's manual pack (this was before I discovered I wouldn't need a new one). I was told that it would cost €44 (about £40) to order a new one. I must say it was a pleasant surprise (for me at least) to discover something that was cheaper in Ireland than the UK! The downside was that it would have taken eight weeks to come in!

It's a good read too.
