Title: Headunit/Amp wiring/possibly out of my depth
Post by: mat-ryder on 07 February 2009, 18:58
Just bought a new HU and need a little help wiring.
I now have 3 preouts (F,R & SW) and i wanted to know how i would wire in an amp etc. I have got a mono sorted already for the sub but would i need a 4ch for the rest or 2x 2ch amps? The other problem i have is how to wire it once i have the amp(s), do i run new speaker wire from the amp to the components and disconnect the existing iso connector from the HU?
Any help is much appreciated ( also let me know if i dont know what im talking about lol)
cheers

what speakers have you got? front component set and 6x9s?

basically get some decent speaker wiring and wire the speakers to the amps. making sure you get the +ve and -ve right. then use a phono cable to connect the amp to the HU.

not 100% what you help though tbh :D

keep us posted!

LL ;)

Right, so if I understood your initial post correctly, you're sorted sub and sub amp wise, yes?
As for the rest of your speakers...
The choice is entirely yours - you can either use a four channel amp, or 2 x 2 channel amps.
Depends on what you can lay your hands on and what your budget is. I personally would go for 2 x 2 channel amps - allows for easier upgrade path; you can upgrade fronts + front amp, without spending money on rears etc. Your available choice for 2 channel amps will be much greater also.

You will need to run all new speaker cables from each of your amplifiers to the speakers.
I would advise that you unplug the 'speaker' output half of the ISO plug and leave it dangling behind the dash - this means you can leave the standard speaker wiring in place (so you can return the car to standard when you sell on) without the chance of any shorting.
