I got a 2nd hand RCD-510 yesterday and it won't accept cd's :( When I press load then select a slot 1-6 it displays the following error message after a 30-60 second pause:

I just done a straight swap from RCD-500 -> RCD-510, any idea what the problem could be before I return the unit for a refund? Everything else appears to be working.

have had this myself a couple of times with copied cd's. Are the ones you are trying genuine? Or if copied are they closed after the burn?

As above, if the copied CD's are not on "Audio" CD's then the thickness is slightly different and that throws the Autochanger working of the unit to stop things jamming inside.

just out of interest clive how much did you pay for the unit?? was it direct from VW?
-
^^ I'd also be interested in knowing the above.
Is it an exact fit?
Do the MFSW buttons still work with it?
-
I'm not even getting as far as inserting a CD, it's when attempting to insert a CD that I get the error. The slot remains closed and I don't hear the mechanism moving.
It was an ebay purchase, cost £400 and is a direct swap for the RCD-500. I phoned VW and they wanted just over £800!
Oh and the MFSW buttons work with it!

And the RCD-300? I'm on the very primitive model
Will it not accept the cd at all? Could well be a shot mechanism and already have a CD in it. Either way I suppose its hinting on attempting to get a refund.

Disconnect the battery, press the power button on the unit to get rid of any charge left, leave it a minute and reconnect the battery. If the firmware doesn't reset then you'll need the services of VW or its a hardware fault

I tried resetting without any luck, now sent back for a refund or exchange. I hope I can get another as its a really nice stereo.

Just a thought, but a lot of newer units now ship with tranportation screws to prevent the unit from getting damaged in transist. I guess your's doesn't still have these in place do they ?
