of course, even a poor student like my self can afford that.

H'mmmmm, this is vaguely where my Jetta Syncro headed off to from Bristol, when I sold it a couple of years back.
I believe the guy bought it as 'a project' too.
there's a 1/115 chance it's the same car, I guess.

I like the word Rare. That must make it worth a fortune then.

How much power can them there synchro boxes and diffs handle then ?

Just cos something's rare doesn't mean it's worth lots of money. 115 total import does mean they are properly rare though (not Rallye rare)!

Tsk.
Rod-change Syncro 'boxes can do about 100-110bhp before spitting their dummy pretty quick. They suffer from the normal 2nd gear crunch and self-machining rivetted crownwheel.
I saw a couple of guys with a rod-change Syncro with a 20VT conversion at Combe in 2007. They were dead chuffed with it. 'Is it on a cable-change 'box?' I asked. 'nah, rod-change is fine' came the response. It had to be towed off the track a while later - first time out after being built. The gearbox had gone pop.
Cable-change 'boxes from the Syncro Passat won't be easily upset by +250bhp.
Rear axle (same on Rallye and Syncro except for a few detail differences) can do 250bhp.
If anyone wants a Syncro rod-change gearbox I have three in my outside store. All good (for up to about 100bhp).

bugger all whellspin dosen't get on with the diff, split the box and bolt the diff inproves things a lot, they can take about 150 then as long as you don't uprate the clutch. but a good 2.0 8v will give the clutch greif and dispactch it quickly if driven hard, uprate the clutch and the mainshaft snaps chould graft a 16v mainshaft into the box but still no where near as strong as cabel change and probaly costing the same.
