Title: Standard Airbox/Intake pipes.
Post by: th3_f15t on 06 February 2009, 12:29
I've just gone and bought an airbox to put in my Golf GTI 8v but I think it's from a different engine code than mine.

Basically, can anyone provide pictures of a standard mark 2 Golf GTI 8v engine bay and if possible, the airbox when removed from the car.

Will put a pic of my new box on here later to see if it's the right one. I'm new to Golfs so need some expert advice. Cheers.

what engine do you have?  there are 2 commonly available 8v GTI lumps in the uk, the PB and EV code.  PB is digifant (electronic) injection, EV is k-jet (mechanical) injection.  The 2 airboxes are completly different.  Top pic is a k-jet 16v, ignore all the inlet & stuff just concentrate on the airbox:

this pic is a digifant 8v, again ignore the engine biuts that differ, its actually a 2.0 with various MK3 bits on, but airbox is MK2:

I think they've given me the wrong box, will double check later. I told them mine is a PB, it's the later GTI engine, checked in my Haynes manual.

If it's wrong, any way of modding it to fit? Or is it not worth it, just go back and get the other box?

Where does the air come into the air box in the PB engine box (bottom picture). I can see the one that takes warm air from the manifold on start up but what about cool air aterwards..? Am I being stupid here...

theres a big hole in the front, it should hook into a plastic shroud round the driver side headlight, but the upper bit is usually missing.

Is that a big problem and/or easy to get hold of? Going back to VWS today to swap the parts over.

Yes! Finally found an air box and that plasic bit you mentioned, hoping to pay £30-50 for it all, standard and un-messed with and it's got a filter with it too. Good deal?

I'd not pay more than 20 quid, but it depends how desperate you are for one
the shroud isnt really the end of the world if missing, quite a few people remove the sticky out bit on the front of the airbox for more 'induction roar'  Cant say I noticed much difference to power with or without it
