I'm going to see and test drive a mkV GTI tomorrow, that I might very well buy if it's up to scratch. Anyway, its spec list includes a sunroof. Having never been in a mkV before, am I going to be able to tell that it's definitely a factory sunroof? I'm not interested if it's not.
Could anybody post an interior picture of a factory sunroof so I know what it should look like, or a link to such a picture? I presume it should be a glass sunroof with a sliding blind?
Thanks!

I would very much doubt anyone would be stupid enough to fit an aftermarket sunroof to a MkV, at least when it was between new and a few years old, probably devalue it.
-
It'll be factory, if its sliding electric, with proper integrated controls and steel/body colour it'll be factory. If its glass and pops up manually with a Brittax logo on it could well be aftermarket. Somehow I doubt it
-
If someone was silly enough to put an aftermarket sunroof on it, then I'll eat my desk!!
I'm sure it'll be fine mate

Well what do I know, I thought aftermarket sunroofs died with flares and tank tops :smug:
I can't believe anyone would cut a hole in their roof in this day and age

Re OEM tank tops sunroofs, there should be a sprung lip as well (when open).
The OEM sunroof is excellent.

Yup - complete weirdos. Why did I ever register on this site??!!
Nah - seriously, I've gotten great help from everyone here so far - so thanks to everybody. This'll be my only my second car, and the first that I haven't had personal knowledge of it's entire history before buying - so I just want to make sure everything is all correct and proper!
Nige_s, any pics I've seen of white, red, blue etc GTIs with sunroofs, the sunroof is black on the exterior, not body colour - leading me to believe it's a glass sunroof. Is that not right?
-
If no one posts by the end of the day I will get some pics up for you when I get home this evening.
-
Appreciate that Alan. Can you confirm that it is a glass sunroof?
Is there any chance anybody knows where I might find a pdf copy of the VW brochure for the mkV GTI online?
-
Steel or glass, I'm no expert but I reckon an aftermarket sunroof will be a dead easy spot. Like I said if its got fully integrated controls slides into the roof space between the headlining its got to be factory. Open it and if the panel/recess is pressed/shape out of the same steel as the roof its real.
Aftermarket ones will most likely be manually operated, via a clunky latch near your head and tilt only. Will have a big weather strip for the panel to sit in.
It'll be obvious if its not factory.

Fair 'nuf then. Thanks everyone!
-
It's definitely a glass sunroof!
-
if you still need this i can get you a pick of my oem one
-
Oh yeah. I said I would but totally forgot, sorry mate.
-
A factory fitted one will be tinted glass and will be electrically operated allowing the sunroof to be either tilted or retracted. The switch will be on the roof lining near the interior light switch. There will also be a manual operated blind under the sunroof.

Well, I saw the car on Saturday - and there's no doubt it's OEM. Just one of the many things I wanted to be sure of! Thanks for your help everyone!
