Title: Help, no brake lights!
Post by: Mirage- on 30 June 2004, 09:47
Guys a friend following me the other day noticed that I had no brake lights.  I've checked the fuse and nothing wrong there, checked the bulbs and nothing wrong there.  Only thing I could think of was the switch? but need somebody to tell me what I'm looking for so that I can fix it.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards

Ian

Now then mirage, hope you are well matey, still need to sort out a meet sometime. Anyway, if fuse and bulbs are ok then normally there is a plug just above the brake pedal that makes the contact to turn on the lights when the pedal is pressed, this can sometimes work loose, check that out.  :)

The brake light switch on the brake pedal is a common failure.
New switch costs no more than a tenner.

Could also be the connections on the bulb holder, mine was a bit intermittent on one side, nothing to stop it being both sides??!

I agree with golfVR6. I had to replace 2 on my A3. German & Swedish do them for a ?5.

Takes about 5 mins to do.

Good luck.

Don't buy it from German and Swedish, thats probably why you had to do it twice, vw costs a small fraction more.
If both sides have gone and the bullbs and fuse are ok, chances are it will be the switch itself.

Thanks guys it was the switch but me being me didn't bother taking it out, just hit it with contact cleaner and give it a bit of play to loosen it up again.

I'm not lazy, I don't mind doing jobs once I start I just have motivational issues.  ;D

It was VAG branded so would make no difference. ;)
