As you know, i'm organising S2N, so just for fun, i flew out to Switzerland at the weekend to prepare Day 2 of the Rally.
It involved driving 930 miles in 3 days, only 200 we're done on motorways (laughable as the Swiss have 1 lane motorways), most of the driving was done on the passes.
However, this is the car I was given from the hire company:

Could anyone tell me what a Mk4 2.0 4motion really is apart from the obvious as a 2 litre car with 4 wheel drive.
Its performance was dismal, and its not available in the UK. Its 5th gear was higher than a 16v Mk2 - no joke - to do over 100, you were over 5,000 rpm.
And here is the shot of me chasing an Envo in it:

The race lasted about 0.5 seconds and I'm not sure if the Ferrari noticed me. Or anyone else for that matter. And its engine sound was glorious just in case you wondered.

fookin hell justin what a life you lead! what do you do?
those mountain roads look good, you should of taken the valver out there mate ;)

Trust me, once i was on the passes i was yearning for my valver (or the MG). Either one would of been fun. The 4motion was certainly not fun. Solid, but not fun. And the 2.0ltr engine was awful.
I have some videos that i'm making into mpegs at the moment that will show some of the passes. I'll post links today or tomorrow. But they will be big.

Is it really the 4motion / haldex system or just a permanent 4wd ? I'm suprised a 2.0 is powerful enough to drive the weight of an estate through a haldex box :o
-
definitely 4motion
-
what the hell where vw thinking ???
tut tut :D

here we go, found out why it was so awful:
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=http://www.autonetplus.com/autonetpluscom/noticias/articulo.asp%3FId%3D90&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dgolf%2B%252B2.0%2B%252B4motion%26start%3D60%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26sa%3DN
apparently, its a 8v 2.0 engine developing 115bhp, and unlike all the other 4motions, they only gave this one a 5 speed box.

you have to look at the market place of the country you are in. lots of hills, lots of snow, want a sensible VW family car? A 1.6 2wheel drive Golf wouldn't even get to your garage so a 2.0 4wheel drive is much more sensible.
same idea with the old mk2 synchro. a 5 door, plain looking, low power 4 wheel drive? no wonder not many sold in this country.
we are just used to 4 wheel drive VW's over here meaning performance cars :)

I'm pretty sure that'd sell over here as a utility vehicle if they whacked a 1.9 PD engine in it.
-
i'll give the car this - it didnt have any problems with hairpins. i could easily drive up the steepest part of the hairpin (which seemed to be around 30-50%).

You can get Tdi 4motions i saw a few in france this year they where mostly from Holland though

I see the snow is quite deep in Switzerland. IN JUNE!!!!!!!!!
The rally is in October. I'm a little scared now.
-
ah, that picture was taken at the top of Grimselpass, so we're at 2200m, and that was in the position of where a snow drift was, hence the height. the snow everywhere else on the pass was mostly gone.
october should be okay, snow starts in late October.
