Title: Best one to buy?
Post by: Egbutt Wash on 04 February 2009, 22:02
If money was no object which Mk2 GTI is the one to buy?
I am tempted to see if they are any good.

Big or small bumper, 8v k-jet, 8v digi, or 16v k-jet, is about all the choices you've got.

Unless this is brand new information to you, you are SO trolling the forum.

If money was no object then it would have to be a Golf Limited, but it's not technically a GTI.

Gibby, do you mean the 16V G60?

That's what I'd get if money were no object.
If I was limited to £8k or so I'd get a Rallyee

I'd have to go with what Gibby said. Wouldn't say no to an 8v G60 though.

Limited, definately. Mmmmmm..

If not, I'd go for a concours, low mileage valver.

i'd build a 20v turbo with 4wd and try to leave it looking totally standard

go off killing M3'S and big Audi's

:) :)

Back to the original question, it all depend whatyou want it for.

I like original, unmoddified cars personally.

I had a 89 small bumper 8V until recentley. I loved that. I didn't drive it very far or very fast, but being used to driving diesels as daily cars it's low down torque and no need to go beyond 3500 rpm suited me.

I've just bought a 1990 big bumper 16V but hav'nt driven it much yet. I prefer the look of the newer car (big bumpers on early cars is just wrong tho) I'll just have to get used to a different style of driving. Power steering is nice. Just enough assistance to help you out parking, but plenty of feedback on the move.

a realistic buy

16v or g60 8v.

modded one: 20vt

Big bumpers ftw
Title: Re: Best one to buy?
Post by: kerrly on 05 February 2009, 13:15
in standard form and only including GTI variations i would have a edition1 G60 GTI  as i have had a few 8v and 16v already so a ed1 would be something new.

Money no object golf would  have to be a Rallye with a supercharged R32 engine

RE rallye weight - i cant imagine that it is really that significant

Can't believe you guys actually responded     Haven't you noticed that he hasn't responded to anything?  And look at his sig list of cars - not impossible by any means, but given his history on this forum, I think he's taking the p155.

That list of cars is correct.  The Ford Ka stays over on the Isle of Man.  It's steering is sublime, much better than VW's MK5 GTI.

I am really tempted to buy a Mk2 GTI, a car from my well loved Alfasuds era.  Hopefully the steering will be good.
Original condition, just serviced and repaired, NOT modded.

yeah but i know which one i would have !!!!

hmmmmm golf rallye  :embarassed:

Post by: danny_p on 05 February 2009, 20:32
poverty spec syncro was more than a 16v

would like a rallye but to drive prefer the syncro tbh.    mine is near as dammit a rallye underneath,  has as meany ponies and weighs less  and i'm not worried about driveing it like a loon

Title: Re: Best one to buy?
Post by: Diamond Hell on 05 February 2009, 21:32
Yeah 160bhp with that weight was never exactly going to be highly exciting. That is not a fair comparision though, poor farmer spec 5 door syncro against the Rallye. All those luxuries weigh a bit as does the charger.

Actually it's a pretty fair comparison - the Syncro had a fair spread of spec - central locking, power steering, some had electric windows and a sunroof.

And then there's the G60 Syncro and the Limited.  I'd be interested to see kerb weights for them, but Google isn't quite as willing as with the Rallye.

It's the luxuries that I don't get about the Rallye.

It's a rally-replica - an homologation special.  Other similar cars of that era, like the E30 M3 didn't get criticised for being over-weight and under-powered.  VW really did shoot themselves in the foot with the whole Rallye project.  They should have just done the Limited in greater numbers.

As many people have stated previously - more doors, more whores, innit.

Ya box arch nonsense ain't never gonna work on the fairer sex.

Yeah it's a very odd car, especially as it cost twice as much as a GTI when new.

S'alright, plenty o' women in the salon.

Failing that a nice 16v, used to be 8vs but give me screamin valvers, will one day build it as a 'charger as homage to the Limited

Oh ok... there's another guy from the Mk2 section who regularly comes over to the Mk5 just to vent his venom, so I was beginning to wonder how more are like that!     I'm a Mk2 owner as well - Mk2 16v, 3-doors, Royal Blue, Big Bumper and 73k from new   In fact, my fav car of all time is the Mk2 16v - just can't better it.

Just point out these venomous posts to the moderators, and they will usually delete them. Some people post things up knowing perfectly well that they will get deleted, and even say things like, 'I wonder how long it will be before this gets deleted'. I do not see the point in that at all. Its just wasting everybodies time reading their drivel.
[/quote]

Well I'm sure most of you guys are ok... In fact its only one Mk2 owner who's a regular giant troll on the Mk5 section - Sharpie!

Yeah, put me off a bit too. The MK2 was created before car manufacturers started concentrating on safety a lot more. With the MK3 they reinforced the doors, bulkhead etc. Hence why it got heavier.

I've just done as you suggest danny and watched the crash test of the Mk5 Golf.
It looks no worse than a fairground ride.
The Mk2 test on the other hand was appalling.

The Alfasud had the good grace to dissolve away in the decade in which it was built.

They normally like to introduce themselves through the back door, though.

At least if you're only 2-up this gives them a little way to come before they get very personal.

Why would you [apparently] consider a car built in a time when crash protection was a design afterthought for most cars, and then disregard that car for being less safe than a Mk5 Golf??

Egbert is certainly not the brightest button in the box.

I dunnno, I think as previously mentioned the key here is not to crash in the first place.

Perhaps if people didn't have all these driver aids and their cars didn't turn into bouncy castles at the first hint of a shunt they would concentrate a bit more on what they are doing? Driving to work on Thursdays with no ABS, TC or A/B certainly focused my mind.

Mind you most people don't give a sh1t about driving, it's merely a means of getting from A to B, leaving other drivers to look out, plan ahead and generally compensate for their lack of talent and or awareness.

But if you want a focused drivers car buy one, but don't expect it to have all safety/creature comforts of a family car.

think the crash test vid is the reason why we upgrade the brakes and suspension LOL

but like i read some where , the car mey stand up to the crash but if the human body stops from 70 MPH to 0 in a milli second it will kill you END OFF

so no matter how safe the car is you wont walk away

if you crash into the imovable object  it allways wins.     been between the imovable object  and irristable force  is also bad news.
