Hi, would appreciate any help, or advice, I have a Mk2 GTI 8v 1991, about 6 mths ago it started playing up; the engine would surge when cruising along at 50-60. Occasionally would stall, now the engine actually cuts out (same speeds) dangerously as I have to drop down 1 0r even 2 gears. - anybody else out there suffered similar problem? would appreciate any help, before this happens when overtaking...

Fuel starvation maybe?
Is the fuel pump getting noisy?
-
Interestingly, the fuel pump does not make any noise other than the 'buzz' you get for a second or 2 once ignition is on, however, I did have a slight problem a month or so ago regarding the fuel pump, it would occasionally not 'turn on' when I turned the key. This problem was fixed by the garage. However could it be that the fuel pump is on its way out? I presumed they either worked or did not work?

They can go suddenly but they can also go progressively as the bearings start to go........as happened on my old Audi coupe GT.
As the bearings went it got progressively noisier and noisier........and then one day, went to overtake a lorry on the motorway, put my foot down and it died..........most embarrising :-[
There is a procedure in the Haynes manual for checking the current draw.
-
I must admit, I still need to buy a haynes manual for it, Is it relatively straight forward to check? - cheers for the quick reply!

The test I was thinking of is to see how much current its drawing. Can't find that test in the Mk2 Haynes but I did find something in the Mk1 Haynes.........section 6 onwards here:-

But obviously yours being a Mk2 it may not apply. There is something in my Bentley......I'll try and remember to have a look for you, but I'm afraid I haven't got time to look just now.......tomorrow or Sunday if you can wait.
