Title: break Lights. Can you fit yourself?
Post by: g10gti on 03 February 2009, 21:54
Hi I have mark 5 gti and was quoted £65 from Arnold Clark to replace bulb and fit back left brakelight. Is it easy to fit yourself? thought this quote was way to high. Any ideas what bulb size standard, how much etc.

Take the car to Halfrauds, pop the rear trim cover, take the bulb out, take it into the shop, find the match, buy the bulb, fit it, replace the trim, job done.

My near side brake light has gone, how easy is it?

Dead easy,
1. Slide part of the boot lining trim away from the boot opening ( you will see a slash in the material)
2. Pop off the connector with a screw driver, put the screw driver in the slot.. The connector was blue in my case.
3. Unscrew the two nuts (10mm I think). Take care not to drop them behind the trim.
4. Slide light unit out.
5. Unclip bulb housing.
6. Replace bulb.

Look at http://www.powerbulbs.com/ if you don't know what size of bulb you need....

I haven't done it before and assumed people on here would have done.  People shouldn't be afraid to ask questions on here, isn't that the point of this forum?  Also, I simply don't have the time to fiddle around with it trying to work out what to do, so I thought I'd ask what the procedure was.
