I'm sure this must have come up a few times before (however my quick search came up blank). I'm looking to buy a MK1 GTI (ideally a later 1.8 or even Campaign) and was wondering how much I'd be looking to pay? I'm not necessarily after a minter and am willing to put in some work.
I've already looked at one Y reg GTI which was a shed. Couldn't even open the bonnet - didn't matter though because I'd already ruled it out...

Hi matey, good question but you will find that it will depend on how much you are willing to pay and what condition the car is in, there doesn't seem to be any hard and fast rules on the price of mk1s but they are steadily becoming more and more expensive, if you find the right car and are willing to pay the price asked then I'd suggest that you go for it.
Best to check out places like autotrader or the Golf+ website in the classifieds to get an idea of how much they are going for, I'd be surprised if you can find a campaign though. Happy hunting :)

It's a pretty open ended question I guess.
Was looking to spend around 1K - 1.5K for something which might need some tidying but wouldn't need anything major doing. Am I dreaming?
Anyone care to share how much they picked up their mk1 for and what sort of nick it was in.
-
No not dreaming, for 1 - 1.5k you should be able to get something that may need a bit of tidying. No point in telling you how much mine cost as it's a cab and it's a J plate anyway, comparing apples and oranges. :)

WOW.... I mean WOW. I feel sorry for you guys, I paid $600 canadian for my 80 cabby w/ a 84 gti motor that converts to about 330 in the UK, for a nice one you are looking a $4000 here so like 1600 over there. sorry I would put the pound sign on the prices but my key board does not have it :-[

You must be targeting it at the wrong audience, try e-bay or advertising it on a specialist magazine like PVW or The Golf+

To be honest if you have a MK1 you will find it very hard to even think about selling it as in my eyes my MK1 is priceless, it doesnt look as good as adams one tho. But im happy.
Hope you find one soon as you will love it when you do finally get one, they are great fun and they make peoples heads turn!!
