Title: fuel gauge problems

hi all,
my mk16v's fuel gauge has decided not to work, before i start spending money on it, are there any obvious thinks that i should check, so far i have checked the instrment fuses, and hav unscrewed the inspection hatch in the boot and checked the wires. What next!!

check the connections behind the clocks in the dash make sure they are all sound

Did you take the level sender out and clean up the metal contacts?  It has several levals, Full, 3/4 1/2 1/4 and empty I believe, if you move it with your hand do only some of the levels work?

i have not taken the sender out yet, i only had a quick look after work, to get it out do you unscrew what looks like a large plastic 'bottle top' with the weires coming out of it?
