Title: 1/4 mile times....
Post by: kniterider on 28 June 2004, 19:56
right due to up and coming events.. (gti festival!!) i was wondering if anyone had the info on the following.....

right i want 1/4 mile times on the following cars.. (standard, from mag reviews etc)so we have an idea how our standard/modified times compare with the above figures (if anyone can find out??))

mk1 gti 1600
mk1 gti 1800
m2 gti 8v 1800
mk2 gti 16v 1800
mk2 g60 1800
mk2 rallye 1800
mk3 8v 2000
mk3 16v 2000
mk3 vr6 2800
mk4 1.8 20v gti (non turbo) 1800
mk4 2.0 8v gti
mk4 1.8t turbo (state variation)
mk4 v5 (not sure on engine size)
mk4 v6 4motion 2800
mk4 r32 3200
mk4 tdi (state variation) 1900

this (if we could get hold of press issue figures for all above examples) would give a good guide line to what speeds and times we could expact as a base example for our cars??? please excuse me if i havent included your car/s (cabriolets should fall into same bracket as hardtops...)

According to that site ...

1/4 mile times:-
MK2 8v 16.6 secs
MK2 16v 16.2 secs

Not alot in it! I suppose the terminal speed must be close to 90, that does the 8v a few favours with the gearing as that's about top in 4th.

More fuel for the 8v versus 16v eh boys ;)

to be fair gaz, i think you are on a bit of a mission impossible with this. VW don't publish 1/4 mile times, most magazines don't apart from maybe VW Motoring.

will just have to see what happens on the day :)

Of the GTIs (and G60s, VR6's etc) we've got here, mine's got to be amongst the slowest.  Standard except for suspension and big heavy alloys!  I'd hope to be quicker than a CL tho'  ;)

Me v Gaz would be a fair race in terms of cars, altough apparantly he's a bit of a drag demon (not drag queen), so he'd probably win. :(

your 20v would whoop my 20v richy!!!! (maybe not 8 weeks ago befor eshe blew up!!!, shes still not 100% right, thats why im gonna be razzin it up the strip in me 16v!!!) drag demon!!, yeah thats me, get on the line fist, wait for your oponents 'white' light to go out, then when the orange is on go, by the time youve waited for the green your out gunned by some one who knows what there doing!!! (obviously not to quick!! as youll get a false run!!, it takes a few runs to get used to the timing of the lights, as not all systems are bang on the same!!!!)

as for figures, i though it would be fun to have a print out of standard sort of 1/4 mile figures, so we know wether were good or not!!
oh well maybe just wait till were all done and jv can bung up a graph etc with our respective times!!!

my 16v has just had new cambelt and tensioner and a new clutch cable, (no worries about it blowing up!! lol and ive got well smooth clutch take up now!!!)

and all i can say to the bloke who i got the car off is 'b@llocks' did you change the timing belt!!! (1 of the aux crank pulley bolts well manked (been mole gripped and gave up i reckon) so had many other bolts!! so all drilled out and nice shiney stainless ones in place!!!

see you on the strip!! (no spare wheel or jack, just 2 cans of tyre weld, drivers head light removed, few more tweeks as well!!!)

would be nice to put this against another 16v, dunno what shes kickin but it fookin flies!!! (smokes a tad now and then 'valve stem oil seals to be done later next month'), its got pipercross induction kit, and full scorpion stainless, was told it was chipped when i bough it but apparently thats boll@cks (so ive been told), spare wheel and jack and other heavy items will only be removed for weight measures and drivers head light (1 min removal time) will be removed for induction purposes!! lol

to be honest the 1/4 mile figures can be a bit duff.

at santa pod with the chavs, most reaction times were around 0.4-0.8 seconds, which demolished your end 1/4 mile times. Even the pro driver in a Touring Car Astra and VXR were only down to 0.3 seconds reaction.

The fastest two cars were a twin engined Corsa which broke a drive joint on its second attempt, and the VXR which outran a Touring car cause the TC had zero grip on the line.

So, the times you'll see at Festival will be dissappointing in many respects as its down to the drivers - and not the cars.

Having said that, if you compare a Mini to a Porsche reaction times dont come into it, but when comparing a VR6 vs 16v vs 8v, it could be closer than you want.

I am considering the 1/4 mile at Festival at the moment, if anyone else is, one bit of advice - practise your starts.

Its not on your list by a G60 16v MK2 was 14.33 when last on the 1/4 miles.

Hope to improve on that at santapod  :)

veedaubgti16v I have to ask where did you get that motor sport pic from? I now where it was from originally but wanted to know where you found it!
