Title: 288mm 4x100 brake discs. Any ideas anyone?
Post by: monzablue16v on 01 February 2009, 16:20
Got some late VR brakes to go on the Golf but would like to stay 4x100 rather than change to 5x100 so does anyone know where I can find myself some 288mm 4x100 brake discs that will have the same offset and centre hole size as the VR setup? seen a couple on vaux sites from a google but the centre bore looks a different size. :)

280mm 4*100 FTW.

Getting discs from elsewhere you don't just have to worry about the centre bore, but the offset on the disc, too.

Use a complete set up, which is available off the shelf.

Mixing and matching is a bad idea, as this inbred imbecile (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lincolnshire/7846801.stm) will testify.

I already have the 288mm setup you see so instead of paying scene tax for some 280's I was going to use them. Might just go widetrack 5x100 but would need some new wheels then :(

Do you have to go widetrack on the 5*100, or can you just bob the hubs on?

no need for scene tax, if you have 16v hubs - find an early mk3 gti thay have the same calipers and carriers as a G60

trouble with most 5x100 bearing carriers easily available is the offset on the balljoint is further forward/back, so the wheel isnt centred in the arch if you bolt em up to 4 stud wishbones.  You can push 5 stud hubs into 4 stud bearing carriers but then you need to re-drill the discs.

Recently though someone on ed38 mentioned that a 91 passat 5 stud setup will work. Looking into it on ETKA they use the normal 4 stud hub carriers with a passat specific 5 stud hub and brake disc.  I assume this disc would work when pressing a MK3 5stud hub into a 4 stud bearing carrier, but this I have not tried.

back to the op, you could swap your setup for an early MK3 280 setup without much trouble I bet, then sopurce a pair of passat 4 stud 256mm front hubs, again scene tax free ;)

I currently have the one piece 239mm brakes which are sh!t to say the least! I have some hubs and a set of 256mm calliper carriers to match. Just want more braking power really! will have to take my tape measure and vernier to the scrappers at the weekend and see what I can find :)
