Hi Mark, you've been quiet for a while.
Doesn't sound good mate.......sounds like head gasket might be going. Whats your oil like any white 'emulsion' deposits in there?

Hello there rich ive been a round just quite .new forums pretty cool. anyway back to the problem . Ive always had to keep the water toped up since day one, when i had it put on the rollers at tsr tim said that i should check the water before i drive as the header tank on mk 2s are crap, the other night i went out in the golf to go shoping got down the road and the warning light was flashing so i stoped to check the water and it was empty!? i hadnt used the golf for a few days but the last time i did i had checked the water it was fine and its been fine since i topped it up its a mystery....
cheers...... Harr1s....

I had the same problem until the garage told me the min and max marks are when the engine is running!
My water was dissapearing out of the valve on the cap on the expansion tank, now when cold the water is lower than the min mark and never overheats and only needs an occasional top up

Mine kept doing this- It was the head gasket. Did the head gasket and problem disappeared

My MK2 did exactly the same, had to have the head skimmed and a new gasket. Started doing it again 500 miles later...so I topped it up and traded it in!!

mines like that, its the presure valve on the lid. its ok as long as you keep an eye on it mate.
