Just bought my first GTI. A 16v and on the way home (obviously!) as accelerating onto the motorway in 3rd as she hit about 3.5k revs the rec counter just carried on round rather quickly but the speed didn't!!
I raised my right foot a bit the rev counter stopped at around 4k. From then on as I pressed the accelerator hard the revs grew but speed didn't. A couple of times when accelerating slowly I could hear a quiet high pitch whine.
Anyway about 80 or so miles later it started to get better and only happened if I slammed my foot down, until it stopped doing that too. On leaving the motorway I tried driving and accelerating hard throughout the gears and the problem seemed to have gone!!
I've never had a clutch go before but I'm guessing that's what's happening? Any help appreciated?
Cheers

Sounds like the clutch to me. Only gonna get worse till you replace it i should think.

ye sounds like the clutch is "slipping" had a simmilar problem to my old dears car recently and it was definatly the clutch

bugger cheers guys. One of the reasons I bought it was so I can do the work myself, decided it's time to learn about these sorts of things
Tried searching but can't seem to find a how to guide, going to buy a haynes me thinks!

defantly clutch going,
it's not that hard to change on a mk2 and there are a couple of ways of doing it,
a) take engine and box out do on floor and put them back in.
b) remove the gearbox from the car. remove both driveshafts gear linkages, clutch cabel and erath strap speedo cabel , support enigne on jack undo the 3 19mm bolts the littel 10 mm sods 3 beneath and 1 at the back, remove gearbox mount, support engine on jack remove starter and bracket to frount mount lower engine and waggel box out
c) or just remove the one driveshaft release the 30mm hub nut on the other side, unbolt box from engine and release engine mounts with motor suported on jack and support box with a rope, then lower the motor and split the box away and change the clutch through the gap without actualy removeing box from car.
b) is probaly your best option once you have done a few c is fastest. a is allways an option if it just isn't happening

Before you go to all the work of changing the clutch, check the cable adjustment. Do you have free play when the pedal is fully released? Is the biting point very high. If there is pressure through the cable because of poor adjustnent, this will cause slipping. Sometimes you can get this simply by resting your foot on the clutch pedal whilst driving. You don't do that, do you?
Like your other post also.....with cars, look for the simple things first. Don't assume disasters!!!

Mine did this - clutch cable was bust - new one (the adjustable rather than self adjusting one) sorted it out.
-
Well all seems fine and dandy today. Drove to work and accelerated hard and seemed to be fine?
Thanks for the input guys I'll try replacing the cable first and see how that works out

had it been standing for a while?

don't think so mate but only done 2k in the last 6 or so months
