Title: New Golf GTI Anniversary Mk3 1996 owner
Post by: bmouthboyo on 29 January 2009, 16:58
Hi Everyone,

I have recently purchased a loverly GTI P reg and have a few issues i was wondering if you could clear up.

1) Firstly there is no paperwork for a recent cam belt change. The car has done 165000 miles and so think its wise to do it encase.

2) The power steering pulls strongly to the left, although i know this is natural with contours of the road I can tell its more than normal. I am hoping its the tracking but if i let go of the steering it kind of shakes. And also it seems to pull to the left with varying degrees.

3) I only received one key with the motor which seems to have a button in the middle but has no effect. Entrance to the car is by old fashioned key in lock method and the central locking locks / unlocks. It seems to have alarm from the LED in the dash but it is permanently off.

4) I have fitted my own after market head unit but for some reason when i turn the engine off it looses all the pre-set station etc. I assume the live feed to the head unit is turning off but not sure how to stop this, which coloured wire might be at fault, or if its to do with alarm etc

Thanks for your help in advance guys

Good evening and welcome...

Cambelt - yes its wise and i never do belt without tensioner, shouldnt be much work (though i never had my mk3 long enough)

Steering - Dont know i have a Pug van doing similar things and customer dont want to spend much on it, so prob wont find out.

Key - mine came the same then previous owner found the blipper for c / locking and alarm (dont disconnect battery without blipper as it wont start until the alarm is deactivated by the blipper (yet again i did this  :embarassed: )

Headunit - mine did the same except it was blaupunkt and it kept the stations but mine wouldnt turn off when key was removed, anyone in the know with audio should be able to help (unfortunately im just a spanner monkey on tractors)

I loved my mk3 and no doubt you will too - Enjoy.

for the head unit you need to find the permanent live using a multimeter. think mine was yellow.

Welcome.

And get over to the Mk 3 Section and ask your questions unless I have already done so?
