I am looking at getting the Alpine 9880r headunit but am looking for the cheapest place to get it.
A while back I posted up to ask the same question and was given a link to a website in Liverpool / Runcorn area but I can find the post or recall the name of the place.
Anyone shed any light as to where I can get a good deal online?
Thanks.

With these new Alpine HUs, do you still need the KCA-420i iPod interface box: http://www.alpine-electronics.co.uk/home/products/ipodr-solutions/kca-420i/
Or is that capability now built in to the new HUs, requiring you just get the HU and a cable?

I just bought one yesterday for £100 including the ipod adapter lead, but it was off ebay 2nd hand but un-used
-
My missus bought mine for £135 or something from Halfords...
-
And dont forget peeps that caraudiodirect do free delivery for us forum guys! checkout code needed from Deals section.
-
Yeah free delivery from CAD ^^^
There is no need for the iPod adaptor box but you do need the iPod interface lead, which plugs into a blue plug on the back of the HU. They will set you back no more than £15.

And are the new ones that you don't need the interface box for quicker at navigating the iPod's lists than the old ones that did need the box? The old ones are really slow to scroll through big lists of artists or songs. Anybody have experience of both?
-
I've never used one of the old box ones but from my experience with the "Full Speed iPod Connection", it's quick and easy. I've got an iPod with 2500 songs on it, and I can find a song relatively quickly. The 6 preset buttons under the display panel can be used to jump to a certain area.
So let's say you're scrolling songs:
Preset 1 will jump to - E
Preset 2 will jump to - H
and so fourth.
It's not sluggish as actually navigating, it's only as slow as the user using it :)

The one I have is pretty damn slow to scroll through a list. There are no short cut buttons to letters of the alphabet, and no matter how fast you turn the volume knob, it takes about a full second to go from one item to the next. So if you have a list of 60 artists, it takes about a full minute to get from the start to the end. Quite frustrating at times!

What's the model number? I know for a fact that isn't like mine, which is the 9880R.

Mine is the CDA-9851. It's about four years old. That 9880R looks nice. Might look into getting one. Do you know if it's compatible with a 3rd generation iPod? What about the iPhone 3G?
-
This headunt is on hold now until my birthday due to other mods being bought but ill be getting it from caraudiodirect unless I spot one on ebay going cheap.
Looks a great headunit and has had good revies on here.

The 9882Ri http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-cde9882ri-p-6423.html looks nice and the colours should go well with the MkV's interior and instruments. Or the 105Ri also http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-cda105ri-p-7207.html

If you're buying the HU for the MK4 or MK5, get the 9882, it's literally the same as the 9880 just different colours :) I haven't seen reviews but I know from my personal use it's fab, several sounds setting to mess with too, nothing too advanced but better than standard stuff.
As for compatibility. It's not compatible with the iPhone but the 3rd gen iPod nano it is :)
