car was serviced in late october and had to go in to dealer for another matter this week. while there they noticed that car had used nearly a litre in 3 mths and they topped up . is this normal ? being a sceptic, i'm inclined to think the oil wasnt changed/topped up at service time. service dept mention that owner's manual says gti can use oil at quite a pace. any thoughts pls?

I am guessing by the fact that it was serviced in Oct that it probably done more than 10k.... so I would say that its a little excessive in terms of oil consumption.
Might want to check through your service bill and see if they charged you for more oil.

car had less than 5k miles at the time

Dont quote me on this but im sure I had to give mine oil twice within the first 10k... I was told that certainly over that period I might have to top it up a couple of times.
I would just top it up... and then follow it with regular checks.

So do you have some allergy against what the dipstick is made of?

How many miles in those three months, and how many miles has the car done overall?
For the record, the offical figures state that the GTI (just like most cars actually) can use "up to on litre of oil per 1,000 kilometers" - so a litre of oil every 600 miles. However, this is extremely rare to use oil at this rate, especially after the engine has been properly run in.
You normally find they use quite a lot for the first 2,000 to 3,000 miles, and then settle down to virtually nothing. When SWMBOs GTI was new, it did use about a litre in the first 500-600 miles (though I can't remember exactly), and it gradually tailed off at around 4 or 5k miles. From then, it used between 200 - 300ml per 1000 miles - which is fine by me.
What ever you do, don't ever overfill the GTI. Whilst some engines are tollerant of being slightly overfilled, the GTI lump seems to be quite sensative. More than 3mm above the max level, and you could well find it gunking up the PCV, not to mention being burnt too.

 ha! i didnt think to check oil level as service was so recent . the car prob has done 600 miles since the service, it has 5.6k miles total

I love it when my car has used a bit of oil. I like adding oil. Just to 2/3 up on the dip stick.
Sad to say my GTI bedded in at about 4,000 miles, so not much topping up to be done (I live in hope).

Sorry to hi-jack..
When I got my mk3 it took 2 liters to get it upto halfway on the dipstick, nothing wrong with the engine though (as far as I know) so im sure that the mk5 gti will be just as well built and be fine without that bit.
Since then, mines used half a liter in 1000 miles. Just wondering if thats normal for a car in my car too?

I once owned a Fiat Regatta.
Had to carry a gallon tub of oil in the boot to keep it topped up.
(The tub cap broke once)

 Blimey!
That must have made a mess  I'm worried even carrying one liter tbh :undecided:

All over my "Peter Storm" jacket.
The Regatta was a horror. Everyday there was something needing fixing. When the car was just 3 years old the gearbox cracked on the way to Holland. I drove it there and back with no oil in the box, thought the changes were a bit stiff.

So if my brains are working correctly, does that mean that you have used one litre in 600 miles? Ok, if so, then that is getting very boarderline. However, just a word of caution - was it actually topped up to the correct level at the previous service? When my RS4 was last serviced (by the stealer - just to keep those pretty stamps in the book ) - when checked it the following day, it was half way beween min and max!

Eeeek - two litres . . . . I'd seriously consider giving it another oil change asap, because the oil which was in the sump before you topped it up would have been working wayyyyy toooo hard. Look at it like this, if your sump is designed to run with say 5 litres, and you need to add 2½ litres in one go (OK, you said you only added 2 litres, but on modern cars, dipsticks are usually 'calibrated', so that it will normally take exactly one litre to go from min level to max level) - then you have just lost 50% of your lubricating abilites. Imagine driving around with both rear wheels missing! OK, the engine may have got off rather lightly, but don't continue to push your luck.
