Got to be the mk1 for me. I've only owned the 8 valve mk2 though so can't say much about the 16V. Why not a mk1 with a 16v engine :)
-
Personally I prefer the Mk1, but you're more likely to be able to get a good example of a Mk2 for the cash, especially if you go for an 8v.
(don't pay attention to the arguments on here, the 8valvers are quick- just not so quick as the 16valvers).
-
yeah mk1 with 16v engine ;D
-
test drive both, dont go on peeps opinions on here, its your hard earned/saved cash so you make the choice matey, both fine cars, just look for the obvious faults/problems on each mk (you should find enough reference on here somewhere!!)

Mk2 16v is the best one to go for.
Mk1's are ok, but have NO brakes at all :D

Mk1's are ok, but have NO brakes at all :D
One of the first modifications anyone who is tuning a GTI usually does, is to sort the brakes out. I did mine last year and have had no problems stopping at all. Its not a big job, and chances are you might find a mk1 with it done already.
-
mk1's are geting silly overpriced due to the rareness of them
MK2's, cheaper parts and bigger.

What have you done to your brakes?
Even with mods mk1 brakes won't be as good as later mks, as the bushes on the cross linkage always wear out.
Unless you want to replace the bushes.

All I have done is to upgrade the calipers to the mk2 enabling me to fit 256mm Black Diamond disc and predator pads. The spongy feel is still there, however the stopping power is very good indeed. I actually find that having a slight spongyness to the brakes gives me more "feel" than on a lot of newer cars that seem a bit "grabby"
-
brakes have certainly got better on newer cars.
the brakes on the passat are amazing, driving the golf afterwards feels like its got no brakes at all :D
-
i agree with blue,
mk1s are getting well pricey, and essentially arent a good a car as the mk2,
so not worth it.
get a real nice mk2 16valve, youll love it forever more :-* :-*
-
looks like the mk2 it is!!!
-
Yeah get a Mk2 , 8 or 16v, get the best example you can find ;)
-
I know how you feel, I have to decide a MK2 and a GL5, the difference being, i already own the MK2... Only you can decide though... I would say MK2 though, i think they're more reliable, and probably easier to work on, but i could well be wrong ok!!!
