Title: Hello new owner and a question
Post by: SeaGolf on 27 January 2009, 22:47
Hi,

Hello to you all from a new GTi owner/forum member.

Apologies for starting with a question...

Just picked up a 1990 8V Big Bumper in graphite which needs a bit of tlc but is worth saving. I have removed front and rear bumpers but the metalwork inside the bumpers that holds them to the car (called bumper irons I think) has rotted beyond repair. As the plastic painted part of the bumpers is fine can I get just the bumper irons and of so where from/how much.

Any pointers gratefully received.

Thanks

Hi and welcome :)

I dont think you can get these parts seperately (could be wrong) but you might have to end up getting a used set of bumpers from good old ebay and using them or transferring the metalwork into your bumpers if possible.

Sorry I couldnt be more help but ive never seem the metalwork sold seperately

Cheers Tim

The bumpers inners may still be available from VW, but you will pay for them. Alternatavly, get then from a scrapyard and just change the covers. With mu car, it was the other way round. The covers were horrible so I bought genuine covers fron VW, got them painted and fitted them. Its not a bad job to do. Just don't lose the wedges as you will need all of them.

you can get the irons from VW, but the main one alone is  £80+VAT!  also be aware that gen vag and aftermarket bumpers have different bumper irons too :(
