will 16v gti calipers fit an 8v gti or would it need 16v hubs
-
rear brakes are the same on 8v and 16v. can also fit mk3 or 4 ones providing the hose as the right connection.
-
the rear calipers changed in around 87, so bear that in mind. but as said 8v/16v ones are the same, its the age you gotta look out for. MK3 ones are a straight swap for the later MK2 calipers, MK4 will bolt up but you need conversion flexi hoses.
The early MK2 ones have the handbrake lever on the top, later have it underneath. The reason for the difference is the handbrake lever changed, the early one has a pin holding it to a bracket welded to the floorpan, the later one is held to the chassis with 2 nuts. Incidently the MK3 handbrake lever will fit a later MK2.

its a C reg 8v
-
that'll be an early one then!
-
So am I right in thinking an early MK 3 calliper would fit a November 91 MK 2 :embarassed:
-
yep, direct swap
-
where the early mk3's the same as the mk2's. Think you want the later mk3 ones as they have the internal handbrake mechanisms which don't seize
-
is there any advantage of fitting MK4 items
apart from the fact they are newer ??
-
think the mk3 ones are more than capable plus you don't have to mess about with different brake lines. handbrake cable is the same for both. You still retain the mk2 pads for both setups
-
if fitting mk3 callipers to an early mk2 would he not need later mk2 handbrake cables
-
yeah i think so but mine is a 1989
-
not quite as easy as that I'm afraid, the handbrake lever mech is completly different.
early cable - 1800mm
late cable - 1625mm
Most of the extra length is down to the fact on the early hbrake the cable attachment is at the front of the lever, and on the late its much further back.
edit: ive heard on the early car you can mount the calipers upside down, only issue with that is to bleed em you have to take em off the carriers and hang them the right way up so the bleed nipples work.
edit2: and yeah the early mk3 calipers are same as late mk2, but its only like the 1st year or so so they arnt so common. Check for a massive spring on the outside, if there is one = mk2, if not = mk3.
Also if you use MK4 calipers make sure you paint them as the alloy corrodes just as badly as the iron. also you get the problem of metal corrosion between the bleed nipple and caliper so they can sieze in! (theres a word for it but it escapes me, corrosion caused when 2 metal types are in contact)

dissimilar metal corrossion

das the puppy

yet to stop it we add COPPER grease :undecided: :undecided:
