Mine does. Lol had some trouble with it just dropping dead whenever I put the clutch in to come to a stop. Went to a VW specialist, he tweaked the idle, and said "all mk2's do that" and now it's fine, so I guess I believe him lol

'all mk2's do that?' hmmmmmm. Tweaking the idle may just be covering up the underlying problem.

Check the timing using Rubjonny's guide http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33253.0
I am on my 2nd 8V now. Both had a dodgy tickover that would drop below 900 rpm idle, then shudder a bit, then recover and come back up before settling. In both cases, a tune up of the timing and cleaning out the idle stability valve cured the problem.

Did he just crank up the idle, or did he check the timing and the mixture too? A digifant really does need to be set up absolutely spot on to get the most from it, otherwise it doesn't perform too well at all

Mine does do this just a little bit. blip the throttle and the revs will drop just a touch below normal idle speed before the throttle idle switch clicks and the ISV kicks in.

Mine does this too, even after following Rubjonny's guide.

Hmm, one of mine never did it (the other did it badly!) and neither does my Dad's. Guess we're some of the lucky ones :smug:
-
my digi never did this, and my abf on kr managment doesnt either.
thats what the isv on the 8v and isv + overrun-cutoff on the 16v are for :)

sounds like you bought a shi**er m8
both my 8 valve's never done that (hint, hint)
i take it you got the cam belt fixed...something to do with that maybe..

Re-check your timing and clean and gap the plugs. An advanced ignition could cause this, then the idle switch will take over.

Try cleaning the throttle body. That always helps on my AGG engined Ibiza.

Just sorted the same problem on mine. There are two throttle switches - one on top of the throttle body and one invisible underneath. The latter controls the idle. Open the throttle by hand with engine switched off. As soon as it opens a hair's breadth you should hear a slight click. This is the idle control switch. If you don't hear it then either it needs adjusting, you're deaf or you need a new one (not cheap, both switches have to be bought together - about £40 I think) Anyway get the Haynes out and that tells you all about it.
Good luck

As dadrathers says on a digi 8v the idle switch is underneath and is a pain to get to. You can also test the switches electrically, as well as the ecu idle function without messign about with multimetrs and the like. run the engine and open the throttle by hand slightly so its reving just over idle speed, then press the WOT switch on top. the revs should then drop, then rise again when you release the switch. This proves that the wiring to the plug is fine, the ecu is fine and the isv at least works a bit! This works because the 2 switches on the throttle body are wired in parallel, the ecu can tell the difference based on revs and/or the signal from the air flow meter :)
