Post by: serafumi on 26 January 2009, 11:45
i seem to have a bit of up and down play on my steering wheel, i believe it to be coming from the bearing on steering column . has anyone ever changed these if so is it a hard job?
cheers chaps

no worries about jumping in . mine is only noticeable when you grab the wheel and lift it up and down. lets hope we get an answer

i had this on mine, a new upper bearing did not help (its part of the lock housing, so you need to replace the whole thing) this play disappeared after i converted to PAS so it was either the UJ or the rack :)

if you can swap your lock housing then give it a try by all means, main problem is most MK2s have the spline adaptor on there which makes it hard.

my mk2 has pas but is there a diffrence between PAS and just normal power steering then? thanks

same thing really, PAS stands for Power Assisted Steering :)
You could say that some cars have power steering (realy, really light and horrible feeling), whereas a MK2 has power assisted, as its not really noticable unless you're parking.  At least I found the weighting to be almost the same when driving along between my manual rack and the 16v PAS rack I replaced it with!
