Title: The Red "I" Debate

I've heard a million things about the red letters in GTi/TDi etc.

What is the official reason for the red I?

I've heard that on GTi models it means its turbo. Mine has the red I but some of my mates dont and their car is the same year?

Also heard its the extra's in the car, but i've seen one with full ac and leather interior and still all siver?

I'm quite interested to find out what it's actually for?
