Title: engine problem
Post by: stevelibs on 23 January 2009, 23:34
Hi I was hoping someone might be able to help?

I have a Mark2 Golf 1600. 91 H

I have had a problem recently where after about 30 miles of motorway/ commuting driving.
The engine will start to struggle. I have no acceleration unless my foot is flat to the floor and that only last a few miles. After this no matter what gear I am in I have no power and eventually I have to stop.

After a minute of being stationary the problem will right itself (there is a strong smell of fuel) and I can continue but only for another 30 miles till the problem reoccurs.

Intially I thought it was the Carb so changed it but this hasn't rited the problem.

I understand its the exhaust inlet to the carb but I dont know where the inlet is people seem to think that if I jam a valve open it will stop carb freezing

Can any one help, let me know

Cheers

Carb engines have a feed to draw hot air from the exhaust manifold to the carb inlet in cold conditions (winter) to stop carb icing. Does your carb draw air this way?
Bit vague....I only have injection engines!

Defo check you have all pipes connected and there are no loose/damaged/missing pipes, this does sound like carb icing.

Carb icing is supposed to be the bane of us carb drivers, not had is myself *touch wood*

there should be a sheet metal shroud attached to the exhaust manifold, and a pipe from there to the airbox.  above where the pipe goes theres a dome looking thing with a vacuum pipe connection to it, whch is hooked to an inlet air temp sensor in the side of the airbox, finally the other vac nippe on the airbox sensor is connected to a nipple round the back of the carb.  Check all of the above, and make sure the war air diverter flap opens when the engine is running.

There is also a heater on the front of the carb, make sure this gets 12v with the ngine on, and the heater itself works properly.  Make sure the earth lead from carb to rocker cover is present too, so all the electrical devices on the carb can earth properly
