Title: Gti airbox for Ryder
Post by: tnewson on 22 January 2009, 22:17
Hello there,

I have been offered a GTI airbox for my 1.3 mk2 ryder. I am just wondering whether or not it will work on my carb run ryder?

I have a k&n air filter on there which i just have to get off coz its making the car faaaar to juicy! It looks like i have room for it :)

Thanks alot

Tom

Stick with the OEM stuff for your model, the GTi air box ain't gonna do jack sh!t for you.

Oh right,

Im not looking for a performance increase im looking to improve my mpg really... Just want a restricted air intake and cant find ryder airbox for sh!t!

Just need to know whether the gti airbox is actually compatable with my ryder?

Cheers though.

To increase your mpg, you don't want to restrict anything. You will only lose power and nothing more.

do you mean you have a nasty k&n bolt on filter?  if so yuou want the complete std airbox from a MK2 1.3.  The GTI airbox sits on the inner wing, you have no way of connecting it to the carb!

However, some SEAT SPI engines or perhaps MK3 Polo GT have a setup that may work, they use a carb style connection on the SPI/throttle body with a pipe that runs to a GTI style airbox on the chassis leg.  MK3 Golf SPI engines have a different airbox, which might be adapted to fit bot the piping to the engine may be usefull.

Problem is any MK2 GTI airbox you cet wont work with this as if its a k-jet it'll have the metering head, if its a digifant it'll have an AFM, neither of which will help your carb suck in air easily.  What you want is the SPI airbox from a SEAT SPI box or one from a MK2/SEAT diesel to go with it.

But at the end of the day non of the above is going to gain you anything over a standard 1.3 pancake filter housing!  Apart from it may be easier to source!

Cool cheers mate,

Getting rid of my K&N will improve mpg as long as i change the needles and reset the carb mixture. An unrestricted airbox allows more air into the engine and to compensate for this you must also add more fuel. Making it less economical.

Cheers

dont drive with your foot planted to the board's listening to the induction ROAR

If the k&n is fitted and the carb tuned to match, you would expect the same if not better mpg, if driving normally.  This never happens of course cos you nail it everywhere for the induction noise.

that big metal bar that is wedged between the air intake petal. It was holding it open like 90%.
