Hi,
I recently bought one of those fake key cases off eBay to replace my battered and selotape-covered spare key (if you're interested - they're actually pretty good: link (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/?viewitem&item=360124967721)).
I set about transferring all the important bits to the new case, key blade, remote electronics, all went smoothly. That is until I came to remove the immobiliser transponder from the original key. It was glued pretty solidly into the body of the old key and, like the idiot I am, I set about it with a screwdriver...
You can probably tell what's coming next
On removing the transponder I realised I'd cracked off a bit of the glass covering, but I figured it would probably still work so put it into the new key case. Lo and behold it doesn't still work at all, and the engine only starts for a second before turning off and whinging about the immobiliser.
Is there anything I can do about this? Are there any ways I can get a new chip and code it it the immobiliser without going through the stealers for a complete new key and paying hundreds?
(Before anyone suggests it, yes I have considered removing the working transponder from the other key and taping it under the dashboard... shortly before realising what a stupid idea that would be...)
Any advice gratefully received!
Cheers,
Ed

Have a word with Kalu on UK-MKIV's he might be able to get a crypto chip but failing that you will need a new key (bottom half) and have it coded to the car

Thanks I will have a go contacting Kalu. I think you mean top half of key though, that's the bit with the transponder chip in it? Hopefully I can get it sorted without it costing hundreds (just had new bushes, service, haldex oil/filter, clutch master cyl... can do without much more at the mo!)

Nope, I meant bottom half - the bit with the key blade attached is where the transponder is. The top half is the remote.

If you do get a new lower half make sure you get an un-used (new) one not second hand as if your car is immo 3 the key can only be coded to one car so if it had neen used before it won't work in your car.

Yeah its the bit where the button is to flip the key out (also where the VW badge sticks to on the other side!)

Yeah - we're all talking about the same bit, I thought that was the "top" of the key but I guess it depends which way up you hold it
