Title: Help with lights
Post by: Simon Mulley on 21 January 2009, 11:01
I've bought a 4 lamp grill with inner spots, problem is tho that the leads on the back of the inner spots have 2 prongs on the end them but the the leads attached to the car have 3 holes, did they change the leads on a certain year or do I have the  wrong leads? Any help would be great.

Are you converting your car from a two lamp to a four lamp?

The two wire connector off the middle lamp connects to another wire which daisy chains off the H4 main beam connector.

I just rewired it when I uprated the loom

are the plugs you're trying to use rectangualr with like a rubber boot on?  If so you're probably looking at the electric headlight control motor plugs.  Some cars just dont have the spotlight plugs on, VAG sell liek adaptor plugs that go between the headlight plugs & the headlights.   If it was me though I'd get an uprated headlight loom which also runs the spots, theres plenty on ebay

Cheers for the info fellas,I can only find the 3 hole plugs in the loom, they're light grey and have a rubber cover,if I get an uprated loom is it easy to fit yourself or is it a job for an auto electrician?

a good one is plug n playe, you hook up the + & - to the battery terminals, pop a trigger wire into the tip & main beam pins of the car plugs and then plug the loom into your lights.

I've solved the problem by buying an uprated loom so I should be able to see more than 4inches in front of me

As a sidenote, cleaning your headlights makes a masssssiiive difference too. People forget the obvious, at this time of year, they get super duper dirty.

Ive had that numerous times, especially when its salty onthe roads the dam heat burns the dirt to the glass!!!!

also cleaning the inside of the headlights helps :)

I'm cleaning the insides next weekend ;)

Most annoying thing for me is that the glass on the inner spots has gone all cloudy! Not 100% sure on how to remedy this. I'm going to strip them down too and see if glass polish on the inside does anything, if not, out comes the abrasive

it'll probably just be condensation/dirt buildup.  Its pretty difficult to clean them without leaving watermarks on the inside of the glass!  If you can get something with a rag on the end thru the hole that should help polish up the marks once dry.  Just watch the reflector, the foil coating on them is usually fragile so try to avoid touching it!

Doesn't really matter now, but i have had the different sized plugs too. I think it's just a year thing, they were going onto an 84 car and the grille was from a 91 car.
