Title: Milltek Advice
Post by: Rollini on 21 January 2009, 10:26
i know a bunch of you have a Milltek and i was considering the upgrade but wanted a bit of advice before i take the plunge.

Firstly what do i need?

Do i need a new downpipe? will any improvements from the cat back be negated by not having the upgraded downpipe? lol i'm totally clueless

I went onto the awesome website and found they have 3 different downpipes adn 3 different cat-backs   :undecided:

the one's that say "use this on the VW MK5 GTI" are:

Milltek downpipe for A3 8P/Golf Mk5 2.0 TDI - £150 inc vat
Milltek cat-back exhaust for Golf Mk5 GTI 2.0T FSI - £340 inc vat

are these right? just trying to get a price range to see if i can afford it  :undecided:

Also whats everyones opinion on res or non-res? i don't want to rude-up my car and make it silly noisy for the neighbours.......having said that i DO want to hear the change when i'm shifting

From your experiences how long did the fitting take? how much labour were you charged?

LASTLY, i'm in Berkshire - does anyone know of a good/trust worthy place to go in this area to have the work done?

Cheers!!
Iain

you don't need to change the downpipe and cat for a high flow one, but if you decide to the one you want is listed as Milltek Hi-flow cat/downpipe for A3/Golf/Leon 2.0T FSI Our Price: £472.05 ex vat
£542.86 inc vat

Those parts are what give you the performance benefit. The backbox itself (you were already looking at the right one) is more for sound and looks. The non-res centre sections have a reputation of being very boomy at mid-high revs. They're VERY loud when brand new but dull down slightly as they get coked up.

You can always get the d/p & cat at a later date. To be honest, although they do give a slight performance gain, they're only really worth it if your car is remapped (not sure if yours is?).. that's where they come into their own.

Soz to threadjack........I was contemplating taking my milltek quads off and getting a the milltek dual fitted.  I would of course have to change my current ABT lower rear valance to standard.  I could of course just stick a standard GTI back box back on it, would I actually notice any performance downgrade.  I am not remapped.

Reason, just looks too aftermarket for my tastes...but it all gets rather expensive when you add it up...

I doubt you'd "feel" any performance loss, you're talking 3 or 4 bhp at most.. but the sound difference will make you think it's slower. Good old placebo.

TBH in the car I barely notice any exhaust/ engine note, it was one of the great disappointments of having the GTI..The milly I have is not resonated too.

Go to JKM, portsmouth, miltek dealers, for Res system fitted will be around £450 inc vat. Give Kate a ring and said Phil Mc sent you, and see what she quotes you, alot less then figures posted above. Top service from those guys. Very highly recommended

i have just bought a cat back milltek for my ed30 fitted it was £422. that was for a non res catback system. That inhances the soundtrack and looks, has made a marginal improovement to the accelaration and next to nothing on bhp. If you want more bhp, you will have to pay nearly £1000  and include a Downpipe and sports Cat for around 15bhp increase at best..
Remap will gain you approx 30bhp, with full exhaust expect 245 approx.
