Title: RCD500... iPod compatible?

Iâ€™ve been quiet for a while, but still regularly browsing/loving the forum.

Apologies if this is a dumb question, but can you easily hard wire in an iPod connection into my MP3 RCD500 changer? Does it have the port for an iPod, as I donâ€™t want to use an iTrip, etc. I love my music and have ripped all my CDâ€™s at Apple lossless so a good solution is vital. Iâ€™ll be using both a new Classic & iTouch 2nd gen.

Would the conversion fit in the glovebox or the armrest? Is the VW factory option any good, dealer fit worth a look or specialist car hi-fi shop?

All help gratefully received.

Post by: R32UK on 20 January 2009, 14:04: I have the ipod dock in the arm rest and used to have the RCD500 factory fitted. So from that I would assume that the work together no problem.

Good luck getting access to all your music though as the control levels through the RCD500 are quite appaling :undecided:

I'm about to do just that - the RCD500 is poor sounding in IMO.

If you go for a std single din headunit make sure you get the VW maindealer adapter for the fascia!

I believe the std 3 way front speakers ain't too bad and that they sound much better with an aftermarket headunit.

I plan to use an Alpine headunit running the front speakers with a sub and box in the boot. I've done this is plenty of other cars and works well as the front speakers will not have to work as ahrd as no bass is sent to them (the HU controls the crossover).

Been meaning to do it for ages but been struggling to find the time. Hopefully have it done in a couple of weeks. :)

I read the post on buying the 2 tier cradle in order to house the standard stereo. How easy is it to get the RCD out though. I see no easy way :shocked:

Post by: Jimp on 04 February 2009, 11:41: I've installed a Connects2 aux in kit on my RCD 300. Goes into the CD changer slot in the back. It basically fools the headunit into thinking there is a CD changer and takes the output from an MP3 player/Ipod/whatever and plays it for the other CD slots. Works flawlessly. I have the aux connector come up out of one of the blank buttons above the shifter. Will take pictures when I can.
