Title: When buying a used GTI.......
Post by: ifti on 20 January 2009, 12:17
Hi all
I was just wondering what things (apart from the basics) I should be looking out for when buying my GTI??
I was very tempted to buy a new-shape Focus ST at one point, but think the GTI would suit my needs better. With the better MPG over the St as well, it would suit my wallet better also!

Im looking to spend around £12-14k - maybe a 2006/early 07 model, with a few extras?
I'll be going to a dealer but would probably get more by going private....

Are there any 'hidden' bits I should look out for when checking over the car if I do decide to look privately??

Thanks in advance.

Apologies.

Hi
I'm selling my GTI. It's a 2007/07 diamond black 3 door model with only 18K miles. 6 Speed manual with interlagos trim. It has fvwsh and recently had it's 2nd service. Totally standard and unabused. Currently on Pistonheads for £13,700, but open to serious offers. Be careful of accident damage, It took me months to find the right one. Also, don't trust dealers, I find them as dodgy as anyone else!! Good luck!

Although your car sounds very tempting, Im after a 5 door model sinceI have 2 childen and our current 3 door is getting to be a bit of a pain!
Im also after some options, such as.....

18" alloys
CD Changer with armrest
Electric folding mirrors
DSG with steering paddles
Multifunction steering wheel

They are the main opnes Im after.
Ive seen a 5 door black GTI, with 30k on the clock, all the above extras plus  few more, for £14k so far, which is the highest I want to go TBH. Im looking to buy within a few months though, so the timing isnt right just yet (having some work done to the house).

You might be better off waiting until March when the new reg comes out. I expect people who have ordered a Mk6  will wait for the 09 plate and could mean GTi's being trading in...
It is also worth sometimes giving your local Audi dealer a ring and get them to let you know if someone trades in a GTi against an Audi. My parents traded their Mk4 GTi in at an Audi dealership going back 3 or 4 years ago when they bought their first A3 Sportback and I can imagine it quite common for people to trade out of a GTi and into a TT or S3.

Have you considered setting up an e-mail alert on VW's website - Used Car search.

It is actually quite good and updated daily as cars come in that fit your search criteria .. and that way you may pick up a bargain.

I know Vaughn bought my previous 57 reg ED30 for a bargain £15,000 from a main VW dealer the day after I part ex'd it with them.  (It was an import and basic spec manual so they must have wanted to shift it quick or something)

TBH, I'll probably be waiting until around May/June until I actually purchase. It'll give me a chance to save a little extra for the options that Im after above the standard car. Also, as yo stated, people may have traded in for the new MK6 model, which may mean more availability for me!
I do really like the look of the MK6 though - but thats out of my price range at the moment!

Its disgusting :( Makes me sick

9 months ago I paid £14.5k for a black 3 door with NO 18's, NO DSG, DO MFSW, NO folding mirrors on 29k miles.

/cries

be thankful VW didn't slash the price of new ones by several thousand pounds making 2 year old ones worth as much as a packet of peanuts.. like they did with the R32 :lipsrsealed:

Are the falling prices all down to the recession and the 'credit crunch'??
I had always assumed a GTI would hold its value quite well, at least thats what Ive been told, but Im surprised that the prices for a used GTI are falling so fast!!
I guess its good news for people like me though, who havent bought their GTI's yet! Im hoping to get a good deal like the spec I mentoned on the previous page, maybe a 56/07 plate, for under £14k, which I think will easily be possible come May/June of this year........

There's an Edition 30 for 15k in the classifieds on here.. mid mileage GTI's are fetching 10k. It's not just VWs though. Great time to buy a car.. not so great if you're selling!
