Title: Which FMIC?
Post by: Krispy on 20 January 2009, 01:28
As above.. any recommendations?
Which is good for the 1.8t..
I was looking at this: http://www.treadstoneperformance.com/product.phtml?p=29&phot_key=477 but it doesnt come with pipes..
I heard the forge intercooler is good but quite pricey..
Any ideas?

You don't need anything that big unless you're planning on whacking a HUUUUGE turbo on your car, you can get them off ebay for about a ton, then make your own boost pipes up.. or if you just want a fit&forget bolt on kit then go for forge.

are those ones on ebay any good though?
Plus i heard if u dnt get the right fmic for your car you might aswell keep the standard sm..

nah intercoolers are pretty standard stuff, almost any fmic will be better than the standard thing with plastic end tanks.. the trick is to find one that will bolt up behind the bumper without having to cut any plastic or the crash bar.

i see, i duno but these ebay ones look a bit dodgy to me..
if i get that treadstone one do u think ill be getting loads of turbo lag with the K03s?

wouldn't have thought loads, but you'll notice a difference

so you recommend i get one of ebay and get some custom piping?

not if you're going to blame me if it all goes horribly wrong

To be honest, if it was me (i'm lazy) i'd buy the forge happy in the knowledge i'll get everything i need in the box just to bolt it on, but the ebay way is definitely the most cost effective :afro:

lol..
ye i think £945 is a bit pricey for a fmic,
i read a review on this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/98-01-02-05-JETTA-GOLF-1-8T-FMIC-INTERCOOLER-KIT-NEW_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em63Q2el1177QQhashZitem380097362916QQitemZ380097362916QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
someone on uk-mkivs had it installed on his jetta and i must say he has convinced me..
so i am going for that one
cheers for the help tho topher!! :)

??

Forge is £632.50 -10% = £569.25 (+ optional £120 fitting at their place in Gloucester). :afro:

Not that I've been looking into this, or anything! :smug:

Look at this guy trying to sell it for £920 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORGE-FRONT-MOUNT-INTERCOOLER-KIT-FITS-VW-GOLF-Mk4-1-8T_W0QQitemZ110174735746QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item110174735746&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

It's got my vote, but that doesn't mean to say it's right!!  A few people have got on ok with the 'ebay specials', but I, whether right or wrong, believe in buying quality, branded parts, myself.  ("Buy cheap, buy twice" is a motto I've lived with for quite a few years, now! ;)

the forge is the best bet if you want a straight forward with no hassle.
if you going custom/ebay the you want to make sure the core is no thicker than 60mm else you gonna be hacking your bumper to bits. even at 60mil its gonna a neen a timy bit of trimming.
60mil is also taking into account that you move your rad back by 10mil
