Title: K04 upgrade

looking at doing a k04 upgrade on a 1.8t engine that originally runs a k03. of course you need a k04 turbo but im not sure about manifold and injectors?

will it require a k04 manifold? if so, how good are the atp hi flow manifolds?

as for the injectors, what different types of oem injectors are there? according to some sites, they have them listed as big or small. So are all "big" injectors the same regardless of the original turbo on the engine or are there turbo specific injectors?

and anything else i might need to know about this upgrade.

S3 injectors, 4 bar FPR, ex. mani (atp one isn't that special), oil/coolant lines

If it's going in a mk3 then you'll be using a custom downpipe anyway I take it.. it'll be different to the k03 one, similarly you'll be using a custom/home made intercooler setup.. the boost hoses are different so you can't use the k03 stuff. If you're gonna do it, do it all in one go as you put the engine in.. it'll be a pain in the rectum retro-fitting a k04 after you've grafted to get all the pipework in place.. only to cut it all out again.

Alternatively just start off with a APX, AMK or BAM engine and it'll already have the k04 on it.

cheers toph, if i dont get a k04 engine, then i will defo be upgrading to k04. going to be using qpeng, so before i go ahead with the conv, i will source all the parts needed for the upgrade and fit all the k04 stuff, during the conv. i will order the qpeng stuff to run the k04 upgrade.

didnt think about FPR, good shout.

as for the injectors, do i need the injector rail with injectors or just the injectors? can these be bought new?

started planning the boost piping, will also order some oil/coolant lines, was looking at replacing them anyway to spruce up the engine bay. need to look into intercooler placement. not sure if i can fit a large one to the front.

the price of high flow mani is around £300. so ideally i would like to find a used one, unless the high flows are good/worth the money.

you can get the injectors new but they're £££££

they turn up on ebay all the time, and they'll go in any 1.8T rail.

ok cool, so if i did buy new injectors, what would i be looking for? 440cc, 420cc? and what injectors will fit on a AUM engine? i think they are EV6 high dependance type, but not sure.

EV12, same as S3 (which are 384cc and plenty for 300ish bhp @ 4bar)

oh and i sorta lied above.. they wont go on any 1.8T.. AGU's had EV6!

i will reiterate my point though.. unless you're getting the AUM dirt cheap, by the time you've bought all the extra bits needed, you might aswell just start with a 210/225 engine. That way you'll also have the better rods and pistons.. giving you the 9:1 CR rather than the 9.5:1 of the AUM. Suppose you could always try to flog the k03s on to an AGU owner looking to upgrade.. but you still might only get a ton for it.

all good m8, i got an AUM now, not dirt dirt cheap, but not bad. 210/225 engines are hard to find under £1000 and they still have parts that i would upgrade. ohh and would flog the k03s on too once the k04 is on and running.

will be selling it. havent even got the engine yet, still waiting for it to arrive.

i will be selling the k03s once i got the k04 running in my car. not sure how long that will be tbh. still sourcing the parts. i'd say 1 month mayb less if i decide to sell it sooner. if the price is right i might even sell it earlier :smug:


As for more k04 upgrade Q's:

i got a query about injectors. as standard the s3/tt use 386cc injectors, but some say that you can use 440cc injectors with a k04. now if i was running 440cc at 4 bar would it be over fuelling or will it increase performance?? or is it best off stick with the 386cc at 4 bar?

i found some injectors on ebay, upgraded ones off a 1.8t. they look like bosch green tops but not sure. Do the green tops only come in 440cc? cause if can use 44occ injectors at 4 bar, i will buy these.

Looks like a bargain.. if they really are 440s

440 @ 4bar = plenty.. ecu / mapping will sort the fuelling out, no need to max out the duty cycle.

ok cool, waiting to find out if they are 440cc, seller doesnt seem to know much about them. no part numbers.

if not then i'm going to try and find a set of bosch 440cc green top injectors. heard good things about them and lots of people are upgrading to these.

the guy selling them came back to me and said he dont know, no writing on them. but they look like green tops. he also said they came off an AUM running a huge turbo, so sounds like they are the bosch 440cc injectors. is there any other injectors with green tops they could be or does it sound/look like they are the 440cc green tops?
