Title: MOT Question
Post by: JC on 19 January 2009, 12:32
One for the more legal begals on here

IF , i have an MOT done early and it fails, can i still drive the car ( not just home from the testing station )  as it has still got 2 weeks to run on the old MOT

or will the new failure wipe the record on the ANPR / MOT system ?????

iirc fail = fail. Only allowed to drive it to a place to get it fixed.

It always used to be the case you could still drive it if the old cert was still valid as everything was paper-based. However, now it's all computer-based I would imagine that it is not so cut and dried. I would agree that it'd be just like if your car has no MOT - you may only drive to and from a pre-booked test via a reasonable route.  :nerd:

As far as I'm aware you can have a test done up to a month before expiry and it doesnt affect the current certificate.
An MOT test is only valid on the day its done.

Might be wise though to ask for a pre-test if thats still possible with these computer tests??

Well good luck with it whenever you decide to get it done!

My father-in-law asked this question recently, i asked the MOT place i go to, and they said they don't know! It is a very grey area.
As far as i'm aware, like Len says, the old ticket is still valid, however if you are pulled by the police, and you are knowingly driving the car with a dangerous fault, then you could be prosecuted.
This would apply anyway, as the MOT is only actually valid as safe on the day of the test.
