I've posted a few technical type questions on there before and never got an answer.
If you don't get any luck on here, try clubGTI.com - there's a big technical questions section on there and quite a few VW technicians who post on there as well.

u got it sorted yet matt?

Only just seen this thread. Wish I had better news for you but that all points to a wiring fault. Tracing it could be a nightmare. However the first thing to do is to check all the physical connections that you have access to. The temp sensor in the bumper is fairly easy to check.. it may have even just become unplugged. However, the puff of smoke you saw would indicated something has shorted :undecided:
-
I'm almost certain all of those symptoms are related to a single fuse for the Central Convenience Module (CCM) as this has to do with both the interior lights and the climatronic. Not sure which fuse it is now but i'd check every fuse in the fuse box to the right of the steering wheel. I'm almost certain it'll be this as a fuse is the first thing to go when you see a puff of smoke!! I've done it many times
Actually, just had a look in my Haynes - Fuse 5 (7.5A) is for Air con, heater blower, ccm, sunroof, electric mirrors, radiator fan, and heated seats. I'd put my money on that.
Let us know how you get on

.. or Fuse 14 (10A)

Hi all,
Big thanks for your replies with advice cheers fellas  well i took a half shift off today and went to local vdub breaker for a rear passenger interior light and climate unit for £45  rang vw for price just for the hell of it interior light £126.67+vat climate unit £330+vat!!!!! right anyway removed outside air temp checked plug and ok checked back in the fuse box and had another look at all fuses all ok so concentrated on the fuses you all mentioned and tested fuse holders with a tester all ok removed the two 7.5amp fuses and changed them over had a check and result climatronic now working outside temp displayed no sensor warning on dash heated seats all ok  fitted my interior light also working as it should and the alarm interior sensors all working now cleared fault codes from vag-com am now over the moon got my car back to normal no more freezing on the way to work!! oh and had time to get the golfgti.co.uk stickers fitted into the car which promptly arrived today!! all in a good day
