What spec Mk4, 150 or 180bhp?

Autocar did a test last year between mk1, mk2 8v, mk3 16v and mk4 anni (180bhp) and pitted them against one another on a track.

The anni was the fastest of the day, lapped the circuit (i forget which one) approximately 2 seconds quicker than the Mk3, which was second quickest.

Hope that helps...

The most common Mk4 1.8T is 150bhp, the same power as the Mk3 16v 2.0.  The Mk3 is a bit lighter, and so I'd expect it to be a wee bit quicker.

Having said that the 1.8T is well more tunable - easily capable of 200bhp.  ;D

mk3 valver is quicker than the 150 1.8t...0-60 roughly the same but 60-100+ is better...i race one virtually every day!

^^^ That's because he's a diesel convert!!!

I knew that my constant diesel-based ravings would eventually pay off  ;D

I was being serious.
As Simon knows i have tried a couple of diesels recently, and i was totally shocked by the performance, particularly by a demo bora tdi 130 i had as a courtesy car, i believe the car may have been 'tweaked'.
What can i say, i drive a v6 and have driven mk2 16v's, an Audi 20v quattro, so i know a good hot hatch.
The diesel performed nearly as well as my vr6.
Saying that , sorry to disappoint you diesel geezers, but i would still choose a v6 over a diesel.
However i must admit i haven't driven a 1.8T petrol, but i can't see it being anywhere near as good as a diesel.
 :D

i have driven a turbo diesel estate at worked and thought it was superb, i dont know the size of engine but  it had the six gears. i just thought that the 1.8t would be quicker. so if i was to look for a diesel whats the best golf to go for for around 10k. would like it fully loaded with toys and leather and quick ;D

That's weird, I drove a Bora PD130 Sport and found it got absolutely spanked by my Mk3 16v in just about every important area - performance, handling, steering feel, brakes, fun quotient. If you're finding it comparable to your VR6 you're making me even more glad I went for the 16v than I already am.

By the way I never did sample this Audi 20v Quattro hot hatch of which you speak. Was it any good?

The bora i had for a day was a demo car, so i can't say if it had been tweaked. I previously drove a brand new Audi S3 2.0L TDI 140, it wasn't half as good.
So i see you are now driving in a valver, good choice, much better than an 8v.
What happened to your old car?
Strange statement about the 16v spanking a pd130 , i find that extremely unlikely, most likely you drove a car with a fault, or just in bad running order.
VR6 is still a better choice than a 16v, much more fun.
The Audi 90 quattro 20v is a saloon rather than a hatch, and yes it would spank your 16v all day  ;)

Having spoken to someone who knows, A standard 1.8t is 155-165bhp, hence why one persons 1.8t is quicker than another's,  VW will guarantee that your car what ever it is, is a minimum of what is stated in there brochure weather it be 150bhp, 180bhp or 225bhp, however VW cannot or cant be bothered to pin point exact bhp so bhp can vary from an extra 5-15bhp, I only found out because when i got mine I put it on a rolling road befor mods and it was pushing out 159bhp so being abit confused I asked the question what is standard bhp, this is all apparent, Idont know the full facts, Its only what i've been told by someone who's in the industry, hope this is helpfull to anyone thats interested,
Oh and by the way I've had a couple of MKIII 16v golf's off the lights so I'd say the 1.8t is quicker, don't know about top end, never raced one on a motorway

The Mk3 16v has the same power as a 1.8T yet weighs less. I guess it's faster then.

VR6, unfortunately the 8v went to an early grave after a freak accident when the road conditions suddenly changed from damp/drying yet grippy to wet and glass-like. As much as I enjoyed the 8v when an N-reg 16v came up for sale for ?3k it seemed wrong not to go for it. Especially as the extra insurance cost me a tenner. It's been interesting driving the two actually, the valver seems just as quick as the 8v up to about 4000rpm. However at that point where the 8v would start moaning and demanding another gear, the 16v takes off like a whippet with an arse full of dynamite. I don't know if mine's had some sort of replacement air filter, but at this point it also starts sounding like a TVR :) I still maintain the 8v is a fast car if driven properly, just the 16v is REALLY fast :) I was stunned the first time I slotted third at 50mph and nailed the throttle all the way to the redline. 100mph has never come up THAT quickly before......

The PD130 I drove was a VW courtesy car so have no idea what state the engine was in, felt strong and powerful tho. However as they can't break 9 seconds for the run to 60 i'm fairly convinced a 16v would tear it a new one. It also has less power and loads more weight. In all honesty I'd borrowed whilst my 8v was in for a service, and when i got it back after driving the PD130 all day I would put them both on a similar performance level tbh. You have to really work the 8v (That's it I'm convinced, diesels drivers are lazy bastards :)) through the midrange, but I''m convinced it would keep up. It'd rape it through the corners aswell......

The 20v looks like this

Its basically a 5 cylinder KR engine with a fuel rail instead of k-jet.
170 bhp from the factory  ;)

MKIII 8v is a shopping trolley, 115bhp and 0-60 in 9.8 sec, how can you call that quick
Title: Re:whats faster??

exactly, the actual figures are worse than that 0-60 in about 10.1 secs :o

Bodhi must be joking, the mk3 8v is slow as sh!t :D
Title: Re:whats faster??
Post by: Bodhi on 19 July 2004, 13:11
Yes but once you get it going quickly it's remarkably easy to keep it going quickly, say for instance on a windy B-road or fast flowing A-road. There are more measures of how quick a car is than it's 0-60 time you know. It's only on a very long straight that the 8v starts to feel underpowered, I remember a presumably heavily modified Nova SRi (it was one of the Crail Raceway poss?) barely managing to overtake on a long straight on the way out f St Andrews. He never could lose me through the twisty stuff that followed. Now I just wish I'd had the valver at that point now - I could have annihalated him down the next long straight instead of merely keeping up with him (it was downhill all that weight the Mk3 Golfs carry comes in handy sometimes :))

This is a similar experience i had when i changed from a mk 3 16v to a VR6, except it's much better below 4,000rpm as well. :D

You should have a go in a VR6 Bodhi, i think you'd like it and you'd be surprised by the increase in performance over the 16v.

vr6' torque is fookin astonishing compared to the mk2 16valver,

and the v6 soundtrack with a k&n filter, wonderful ;)

Once you've driven a 16v or vr6 , its easy to see why people don't rate the 8v.

when i had my 8valver i was looking at buying a vr6,

test drove a real nice one and the performance jus blew me a way,

torque everywhere in the rev range :D
