Title: new gauges?
Post by: kdiz on 18 January 2009, 12:09
Been looking around to see what gauges can be fitted in a mk2 gti and it seems like very very little is the answer. I have found new dial templates and seen the indiglo or el dials but they dont look very clean imo, is there any dials like the ddi ones but for the mk2

OR is there any guides that explain how to fit an LED behind the dials for a backlight, that way its possible to mod the dials to allow the light through.

cheers

I've been looking to do the same thing as well.  I've been looking to get the MK4 Indigo look.  All the Plasma/Glo dials look cheap and Chavvy, I prefer black dials, but they're all white.  The DDI sets are very nice, but they don't do Mk2 as you say, only MK4 and corrado iirc.

I've seen this German mod, very nice.

To do a DIY job I'm thinking of getting some EL foil together with some monkeymetal dial facias.

Put the blue EL foil behind the metal money dials together with the back-lit needles in red, and Bob's your mothers brother.  Hopefully.

I got them ones. Although I don't like the style of them that much, (a bit chav to be honest) they're a hell of an improvement driving at night.

I painted my needles with florescent orange paint, and have ultra violet LED's lighting them up, because the needles just disapear when the dials are turned on.

Yeah, I reckon a style done like the MK3 DDi ones would look lovely, just a nice and simple look, maybe with KMH reading too. There's a few supliers of that EL sheeting, and it's suplied in A4 sizes and such, and it can be cut like paper too.

The "Plasma Dials quantiTEC VW Golf2" ones look reall nice, cleaner than the normal indiglo ones, i could imagine them with white led's instead would be perfect.

I thought about these at first but they seem to have a bit too much clutter especially in the day time.

Maybe the Plasma Dials quantiTEC VW Golf2 with white led's are the way forward !

might just make my own like Flying Elvi

I think you can put your own backlights in by connecting them to excisting power might be a bit dirty way and it wont be as easy but atleast it will look good. Either that or just have white clusters and be done with it.
