Today I replaced the ignition switch on my '89 8v.
When I came to put it all back together it doesnt fit cos the steering column is about half an inch too short ???
With all the indicator switches and stuff in place there is not enough steering column sticking through to bolt the wheel back on.
Also if you look at the ignition barrel housing there is the hole where the bolt goes through and there is the sticky outy bit which is for the steering lock which are about half an inch apart but, on the car, the hole for the bolt and the bit that actuates the steering lock on the column are level.
As I see it , either
1) I have put something back wrong so it doesnt line up anymore
or
2) when I was trying to get the ignition barrel housing back on something has broken and the steering column has moved half an inch or so.
Any ideas??????

At a guess i'd say you haven't put something back on properly.
Take it all off and start again :)

the ignition barrell isd held in by a spring clip, not a bolt. sounds like some diy monkery has happened :D

Phoned my local VW garage and spoke to one of the technicians. The steering column is designed to collapse slightly in the event of an accident so it doesnt pierce your internals. This is what had happened.
Just had to pull it back out again.
